Significance for science
Based on our research a better insight into cause/effect relationship between lung cancer and some metabolic markers and inflammatory as well as into cardiovascular disease and renal disease in patients with lung cancer has been obtained. Determination and clarification of normal body mass, inflammatory markers, potential hearth damages and renal function represent major new findings that will influence the selection of the most appropriate treatment in lung cancer patients and treatment outcome in future. Based on new epidemiological and pathophysiological data, we have better insight into natural course of lung cancer and are able to develop hypothesis and test novel or emerging therapeutic targets in patients with lung cancer. We have presented the results obtained in the course of our project at domestic and international oncology conference and will continue to present them to international public on a regular basis. Active link of our research group with European researchers in the frame of EORTC research programs and an international group researching cancer cachexia enables knowledge transfer to us and outside our group and gives every opportunity for the further fruitful work in the field of cancer research.
Significance for the country
Cancer is the major public health issue in whole developed world. With the ageing of the population, a sustained increase in cancer incidence can also be foreseen. Research and new findings in the field of metabolic and inflammatory markers as well as into cardiovascular disease and renal disease in patients with lung cancer and its rapid transfer into routine clinical practice are of utmost importance for good cancer control worldwide. Our research programme was structured to allow for a rapid transfer of knowledge into routine clinical practice in Slovenia. The importance of our research is based on the fact that more than 1000 new lung cancer patients are diagnosed in Slovenia each year and that the mortality due to this cancer is still much too high. Better control of lung cancer with improved survival rates and better quality of life of patients’ means saving of costs for the whole society.
