Significance for science
Development and research of environmentally friendly adhesives from renewable resources has great significance for acquisition of new knowledge and explanation of influence of different factors on liquefying of wood. The obtained results make it possible to define the technology for production of wood adhesives from natural resources and optimization of the procedure according to starting conditions (ratio between wood and reagent, addition of catalyst). Adhesion at bonding with new adhesives is explained and optimal curing parameters are defined. The structure of the bond established when bonding wood with liquefied wood is known, as well as chemical composition of the bond. Advantages (ecology, conservation of carbon-reduction of carbon dioxide, decomposition) and disadvantages (insufficient durability) of adhesive bond made of liquefied wood are identified. These discoveries present huge scientific challenge for the future scientific research. Studies in this project allow us to be involved in international scientific cooperation with the institutions from USA, France and Germany and involvement in international projects (COST FP1004 in FP1006).
Significance for the country
Wood is the only raw material we have in Slovenia in sufficient quantities and it is manufactured in variety of products. Utilization of wood residues from these manufacturing processes brings added value to these residues and means big economical benefit. Successful development and production of environmentally friendly adhesives from renewable sources, which are comparable to nowadays commercial synthetic adhesives in terms of physical and mechanical properties, have significant influence on economy and society in Slovenia. New technology of liquefaction of wood enables production of new adhesives, which are able to break through to new markets. It is not realistic to expect much significance for development in this field after first year of the project, however, it is indicated that the emissions of formaldehyde and use of toxic synthetic substances in wood industry will decrease. Competitiveness of wood bonding and wood composites companies will increase. The increase in added value of wood residues will be noticed. New adhesives will, because of environmentally friendly composition and reduced emissions of formaldehyde, reduce the exposure of workers and users to harmful substances, and reduce risk for health problems. Environmental consciousness and orientation towards sustainable development will increase.
