Significance for science
Our research has contributed to the development of new concepts and methodologies for the analysis of social networks of scientists. The analysis of co-authorship networks contribute to the understanding of the structure and the dynamics of general scientific knowledge (e.g., the trends of scientific collaboration in Slovenian science in the last few decades) and to the expert decision-making in Slovenian R&D policy (e.g., the influence of co-authorship networks on scientific productivity and scientific impact). The results of our research are useful for both analytical levels. In the context of our research, there have been developed and used very complex concepts, methods and techniques which added new insights (knowledge) to scientometrics, sociology of science, and social network analysis. With the cooperation between scientists of different disciplinary background, the results of our research produced a new interdisciplinary knowledge about the various sociological and cognitive factors leading to different types of scientific collaborations.
Significance for the country
Our research deals with scientific collaboration in broader sense and scientific co-authorship in narrow sense and addresses very important issues how to organize R&D policy and R&D strategy in the national context. The results of our theoretical and empirical investigation encovered different types of structures in social networks of scientists (co-authorship networks) accross different scientific disciplines in Slovenia. These types of structures in social networks of scientists can have a strong impact on the “profile” of scientific community in a small country as it is the case in Slovenia (i.e, scientific productivity, scientific impact, etc.). It is expected that the national R&D policy will encourage an R&D evaluation system that directs researchers to scientific excellence, to internationalization, to fulfilling of socio-economic goals of scientific results, etc. Circumstances that are connected with the use of different R&D policy (evaluation) instruments are especially in small scientific communities (the case of Slovenia) very complex. In all actors involved in this evaluation process, it always exist a doubt about the objectivity, transparency, etc. From this perspective, it is important that the design of an appropriate R&D policy also relies on reliable and valid measurements and explanations about the co-authorship networks in different sectors of science (within scientific disciplines, between the Slovenian scientists and the foreign scientists, between scientists coming from academic sphere and scientists coming from business-enterprise sector, etc.).
