Significance for science
The researches have resulted in basic new findings from the sphere of art and other humanities; they enabled the evaluation and a more accurate placement of Slovene art monuments in the European context, which has not been possible before due to the inaccurate study and particularly the neglect of archival sources and thorough knowledge of the materials in situ. Therefore the results for Slovene art history, and also for cultural history are highly relevant and useful. The results of individual studies were entered in the database Monasteries in Slovenia, which will be also available to other users after the completion of the project. For the first time, basic art historical investigations were carried out of the former Franciscan monastery in Brežice, which provided fresh knowledge also about the artistic activity related to this religious order in a wider context. Archival investigations and building analysis of the monastery ensemble (Helena Seražin) showed that the architecture belongs not only to the circle of the Order’s architecture but also to the broader scope of Styrian architecture built in the so-called Heimat-style. Barbara Murovec was the first to identify the bequest of easel paintings from the Brežice monastery dispersed in the collections of the monasteries of the Holy Cross Franciscan province and other museum collections; she analysed them and placed them within the context of painting related to this religious order and within a wider European context. Ana Lavrič made the first comprehensive study of iconographic motifs related to monastic orders in Slovenia, thus establishing the methodological basis for the research into the iconography of saints in the future. Most important is her research of the relation of patrons in art, that had no direct connection to the monastic order, i.e. religious orders and nobility. She made a reconstruction of the demolished monastery of Discalced Augustinians in Ljubljana. The research, carried out by Helena Seražin, into the monastic architecture of the Franciscans, Dominicans and Servites from the aspect of the oeuvre of the Venetian architect Giorgio Massari and his followers, recruited also from the members of the Orders’ communities, connected the architectural monuments that had been treated only in monographic studies before, into a stylistically homogenous group, which enables better understanding of Venetian architecture within the Adriatic scope. In the case of monastic church of Discalced Carmelites at Kostanjevica near Gorizia she demonstrated the exchange of architectural typology and artists inside the same monastic order from different perspectives, regardless to the borders of order’s provinces. Architecture and architectural sculpture of Cistercian abbey in Stična/Sittich with the new findings, presented in internationally important original paper by Mija Oter Gorenčič, become one of the most important monuments of Romanesque art in Slovenia, whose importance stretches beyond Slovene borders. Her findings in the case of Žiče served in the preparation of the revitalization programme for the monastic ensemble which belongs to Slovene most outstanding artistic and architectural monuments on European level. With a thorough research based on documents in archives Blaž Resman has resolved many questions, regarding the authorship of architecture and peaces of art in the Ursuline convent in Ljubljana; he managed to install the oeuvre of the Ljubljana convent into the larger frame of Central European art. In addition to new findings / new awareness this project also brings new methodologies, approaches and aspects on the research of monastic art and architecture, which already incouraged other Slovene researchers into the research of this thopic.
Significance for the country
The research has produced new basic findings for the spheres of art history and other humanities (e.g.. history, theology), it has enabled the evaluation and proper placing of Slovene monuments into the European context, which has not been done before, due to insufficient study and chiefly due to ignoring archival sources and fundamental knowledge of the materials in situ; therefore the results will be extremely important and useful for Slovene art history as well as wider cultural history. Through presentation at international scholarly symposia and publication in internationally recognized scolarly editions, the results of the hitherto researches have expanded the knowledge about the role of monasteries in the development of artistic streams in Slovenia within the European context, since these Slovene art monuments have not been sufficiently known to foreign scholarly audience and hence absent from the surveys of the development of European art. The findings will also be useful in other humanities, tourism and education.
