Significance for science
The transformation of manufacturing industry form the traditional industry into a new one, which will be based on knowledge, innovation and high added value requires different and innovative concepts and methods of manufacturing, which will enable better mastering of ever increasing complexity in manufacturing, its sustainable development and high competitiveness of industrial subjects. It is expected that the results of the proposed research will contribute to the radical transformation of the manufacturing industry. In the previous research, an original approach to structuring and control of distributed manufacturing systems has been developed, which is well recognized on the global scale. In the future, this approach will be further developed in the direction of autonomous work systems with embedded elements of ambient intelligence and ubiquitous environment. These are new concepts, which will significantly contribute to the evolution of the manufacturing industry. The results of the work on this project demonstrate up-to-date solutions in the fields of novel manufacturing structures and software support for collaborative work in distributed manufacturing environment.
Significance for the country
The economic growth in Slovenia highly depends on manufacturing industry, which is oriented toward export of goods on demanding markets. It contributes the majority to this growth. Hence, the manufacturing industry is one of the most important economic fields, which, in order to be able to maintain this trend, requires significant support in research and development. The project is industry-relevant and will, as it was the case in the past, significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of Slovenia through research and development of new business and manufacturing concepts and models, as well as innovations and transfer of knowledge into the industry. The results of the research have already been implemented in pilot form in Litostroj Power. The possibility of the commercialization of the results is opening in similar industries. The developed generic solutions, in the sense of manufacturing system structuring and operational decision making, are a future platform for all metal processing industry that wants to compete globally. A group was formed with the intention of preparing a larger project in the field of novel manufacturing structures. The group includes the following companies: Mariborska Livarna Maribor, Unior Zreče, CIMOS Koper, and Talum Kidričevo.
