Significance for science
Research carried out within the project are of great importance for the development of materials science, as well as for the development of chemical sciences. A new type of macroporous membranes were developed, which contributes to the knowledge in the field of the synthesis of polymer supports, modification of polymer supports, and to the development of science in the field of separation processes in synthetic chemistry and biomedicine. Separation and purification of biomacromolecules (proteins, DNA, viruses) is of utmost importance for the pharmaceutical industry. The use of suitable polymeric supports for these procedures is very important, as it improves the efficiency of the so-called downstream processing. Optimization of polymeric materials for these purposes gives new relevant information on the influences of individual parameters on the synthesis of morphological structure and hence the performance. Research findings of the project will contribute to the development of science in chemistry and the use of polymers. Within the framework of the project, a number of publications in prestigious international journals in the field of polymer science, organic chemistry and separation technologies, were published.
Significance for the country
Project results are of great significance to the Slovenian industry. BIA Separations company is one of the leading developer and producer of polymer supports for the separation technologies which collaborate with the Slovenian pharmaceutical industry (Lek, Krka) in terms of purification of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and viruses. Furthermore, BIA Separations company produces new products in the field of chromatography ("intelligent filters" for production and purification of biomedicines), produces a new generation of polymeric materials for purification and separation of proteins, polynucleotides and vaccines for the needs of pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Therefore, the project results are very useful for the company. BIA Separations d.o.o. is a global high-tech company in the field of biotechnology, which gives researchers the possibility of integration in product developments and is very much involved with higher education institutions. This allows the results of knowledge to transfer and dissemination. Their products are products with a high added value.
