Significance for science
The most important scientific-research contribution of the applied-research project is certainly the development of a novel control algorithm for electric machines in the field-weakening regime. The algorithm has been tested in the BLDC drive and experimentally validated up to the speed of 20.000 rpm by the implementation of a laboratory prototype for the high speed blower drive. The resulting scientific conclusions and the experience gathered are indispensable in further development of energy-efficient and high speed applications of all project partners. The loss analyses have been done in a way that enables the evaluation of the converter’s contribution and the contribution of the drive’s control algorithm. From the energy-efficiency viewpoint, it has been demonstrated that it is favorable to employ the maximum efficiency control rather than torque per ampere control. The efficiency of employing the so called “line-start” machines in such systems has been evaluated in frame of the project as well. A completely new control method for induction motors as neholomnega systems, which does not fall under the currently known control methods (neither direct-torque-control nor field-oriented-control methods) has been developed. The new method employs the rotation speed rather than the more usual angular position as the base for estimation of dynamic states. The scientific achievements are documented in several original scientific articles published in renowned journals with high impact factor. Based on the project results, a patent application has been filed as well. The aforementioned achievements until now have not been present in the available literature. This consequently demonstrates the potentially high impact of the project results on the international scientific-research community and with it the promotion and visibility of the project group members, project partner and the Republic of Slovenia in the international environment.
Significance for the country
In general, it is still true that electric drives in industrially developed countries convert more than a half of the produced electrical energy into other forms. Therefore, the products on market have do attain regulated minimum levels of energy efficiency. The applied-research project dealt with sensorless high speed drives which market share is unstoppable increasing in several segments. The most important scientific-research contribution of the project is certainly the newly proposed control approach, which will be used in a family of converters for blowers of the company DOMEL. These converters are used in the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning industry. With the completion of the development process and evaluated test results of the laboratory prototype, a solid foundation for further product industrialization for the global market has been established. It has been shown in the frame of the project that the proposed novel control algorithm concept and up to the laboratory prototype developed sensorless blower drive operates at least up to 20.000 rpm with high energy efficiency. Consequently the project results enable that the project beneficiary DOMEL offers the integral family of complete high energy efficient blower drives on the market under its own trademark. Therefore, the results can be classified within technologies for sustainable economy and technologies for the efficient use of energy. The establishment of the co-financier and other project partners as providers of modern, energy-efficient projects and solutions on the global market, as well as their active integration into international collaboration and division of labour, will subsequently allow for promotion of scientific and business activities undertaken by the Republic of Slovenia in the EU and worldwide. The Republic of Slovenia thus proves that it is not only aware of environmental issues, but that it also lends concrete financial support to applied-research and development collaboration in scientific and business fields within projects dealing with energy efficiency issues and environmental protection.
