Significance for science
Project results contributed to the development of science in several areas. An important contribution was made in the development of methodologies for determining the operating strategies for bio-chemical, wastewater treatment plants considering process uncertainty and multiple steady states. Contribution was made in the application of advanced control strategies, such as predictive control, in wastewater treatment plants. We have also contributed to the application of the knowledge discovery procedures, which can be helpful for decision support, in wastewater treatment plants. Our research has contributed to the definition of the wastewater treatment benchmark simulation models, which are used by many institutions around the world mainly for education and research. Our research has also contributed to a new modeling procedure for wastewater treatment plants, including both the water line and the sludge line and their mutual interactions. In addition, the results of the project also contribute to the better understanding of all processes of the wastewater treatment and consequently to their technological improvements.
Significance for the country
The proposed project has a significant impact on Domžale-Kamnik wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation. The results of the project provide Domžale-Kamnik WWTP with the great confidence that the upgrading of the plant with the third level of treatment will provide removal of organic and nitrogen compounds in accordance to the stricter legislation in the next years. Project results will also increase the use of mathematical models in wastewater treatment plants in Slovenia, which will consequently improve the operation of the plants. An improvement in operation will, according to Slovene legislation, effect the reduction of the tax, paid by the companies that are polluting the wastewater and consequently increase their competitiveness. The results of the proposed project will also reduce the pollution of the rivers in the vicinity of the plant. Rational use of the energy at the plant will contribute to the overall reduction of the energy consumption in the country and thus indirectly reduce the environmental pollution and climate changes.
