Significance for science
The achievements in the field of environmental sciences are as follows: The model has been developed and validated for the prediction of depletion of PCB from carstic unknown underground, showing non-characteristic behaviour, e.g. increased concentrations of PCB in waters at increased water flows. By the use of neuron networks the model was composed for the prediction of surface water contamination in time that is consistent with the measurements. This model is useful tool for the prediction of future use of waters in Bela Krajina. We have experimentally confirmed the thesis, that it is possible to destroy the PCBs present under the DL in the clayish contaminated material in the process of the production of bricks by thermal process in which also PCBs are destroyed. Additives were used (industrial waste iron containing powders and active charcoal) in the process where the drying was achieved by microwave heating till the temperature 400 oC+ followed by resistant electrical heating at 900 oC for 3 hours. The environmental risk was significantly reduced due to incomparable lower emissions to the air, due to the absence of transport of contaminated materials and due to the useful product produced.
Significance for the country
Bela Krajina region has faced one of the toughest environmental load in Slovenia in the form of the deposition of waste PCBs in the fragile carstic environment, affecting underground and surface waters and has limited the development chances in the region. The developed model of depletion of PCBs from the underground represents the tool for the decision making in the regional space planning The second problem to be resolved is the final elimination of the deposit of 10.000 tons of contaminated soil. Proposed and experimentally investigated solution in this project represents, by our opinion, the optimised alternative technique featuring the reduced environmental risk and reduced costs of remediation.
