Significance for science
Among results which enabled understaning some key phenomena of gas surge arresters during the surge we need to emphasize a crucial role of a few nm thick graphite platelets, (named graphenes when they are composed of a single layer of C atoms) which emit maybe only a few tens of electrons which trigger first ions responsible that the breakdown voltage is constant with time. Formerly, when radioactive additives were tolerated in these devices, alpha particles had the same role. It seems that this statement of first application of graphenes in any electric device was confirmed by one of referees of Journal of Applied Physics where a paper with our main results was published.
Significance for the country
We thinks that the present project is an important complementary part of knowledge needed for Iskra Zaščite as they are mainly export oriented producer of electronic components. The group at JSI is well experienced in electron filed emission experiments as well as in gas composition determination in sealed vacuum devices.
