Significance for science
The main topic of this project was the preparation of multifunctional spectrally selective coatings for polymeric and metal absorbers of various colours. The coatings were characterised with improved mechanical resistance, UV protection, spectral selectivity, water and oil repellency, which were achieved also with the addition of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). This compounds were at the beginning of the project relatively new, their commercial availability was limited to one producer. These materials, that belong to organosilicium compounds, enabled numerous combinations differing in organic shells around silica polyhedra. Some systematic investigations were performed on influence of POSS addition on the properties of final paint coatings. Various analytical approaches were used for these studies and the findings were published in international journals.
Significance for the country
The project Multifunctional nanocomposite films and coatings supported our investigations of spectrally selective paints for solar collectors. In the first line this project supported the development of all polymeric solar collectors for acquisition of solar heat at relatively low temperatures from 60 to 80 °C or warm air. Absorbers were produced with different colour shades (green, blue, dark red) and therefore appropriate also as facade collectors. The developed coatings were tested also on metal supports. The investigations that took place during this project enabled – in addition to the collaboration with the Slovenian industry (Helios, d.d.) – also collaboration with the foreign industry, mainly with the norweign enterprise Aventa and German enterprise Alanod Solar. The latter enterprise also produced solar collectors with paint, developed at National Institute of Chemistry and Helios, d.d.
