Significance for science
The most substantial benefit for science is the PMSD methodology, which contributes to science development with theoretical and practical assignments. The main focus is in the profound knowledge acquisition of semiconductor behavior at high electrical field, extreme temperature, high current density, studies of reliability and life span.
The developed integrated ASIC research and design activities were focused on ASIC implementation with SoC technology. The SoC technology combines joining integrated analog, digital and analog-digital parts into a single complex integrated system. The R&D activities were also focused on implementation of a single complex integrated system combined together with power devices, realized as a single integrated system ASIC. The realization of such integrated system ASIC is done with BCD technology implementation.
A new challenge also represented the design of intelligent integrated system ASIC which demanded a new design technology. The integrated system ASIC includes implementation of intelligent current driving algorithm for power devices and safety features. The research results of the project contribute to the further optimization of complex integrated systems. The first step in this direction was done with the power device (power transistor) implementation. The realized power transistor was used to drive power modules.
The design of integrated intelligent power systems is performed with the new design PMSD method.
Significance for the country
Development and production of various electrical motors for various applications are well evolved Slovenia. The global trends and growth employment of electrical traction systems dictate design of high performance electrical motors and also demands the use of new generations of intelligent power modules. The new intelligent power modules should fulfill the requirements of more sophisticated functionality, safety features implementation, higher performance and cost optimization.
The developed solution is a good starting point for Slovenian industry to establish even more notable position on the global market of intelligent electrical power modules. The integrated smart ASIC implements intelligent current driving algorithm for power devices and a wide range of safety functions. The ASIC is used for various realizations of power modules and adoptable for different realizations of electrical traction systems. The fact that wide range of functionality and safety features implemented within ASIC also increases the complexity and number of external electronic components is reduced with developed ASIC. For developed intelligent integrated ASIC system a new BCD design technology was used. The BCD technology combines implementation of digital, analog, mixed signal and power functions in a single integrated ASIC.
The knowledge, analysis results and know-how acquired during this project are a good starting point for further high-tech products and services which will strengthen position and reputation of Slovenian industry on the global market. The interest of Slovenian industry was shown by financing, relatively very expensive, international patent applications.
Another important aspect is the preservation of the environment. More efficient electrical motors consume less energy and therefore they are environment friendly.
