Significance for science
Within the research project the technology and the materials were investigated for the fabrication of ceramic electromechanical components and systems. Several technological processes were developed for the fabrication of three-dimensional ceramic structures based on the low-temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC). Also different fugitive and sacrificial volume materials were developed and tested, and some commercial available functional materials were investigated and evaluated. Special attention was paid on materials compatibility with the LTCC technology. One of the important research activities was the investigation of long-term stability of materials electrical and mechanical properties and devices’ characteristics. The research results on nonconventional use of LTCC materials and technology and their dissemination shows that our contributions are important within the research society, and enables to continue or to start new international projects in the field of micro-electro-mechanical systems with integrated thick-film sensors and actuators. The project has also significantly strengthened the link between academia and industry in the field of ceramic materials and technologies for the electronics and electro-mechanical components and systems. Most of obtained results are novel and therefore original contributions to science.
Significance for the country
Research work on the project improved new knowledge of researchers of two research groups (Electronic Ceramics Department at Jožef Stefan Institute and HIPOT-RR) , and introduced knowledge to industrial partner HYB d.o.o.. Based on this the Company HYB can develop new innovative products with higher added value on the global market of pressure sensors. One of the research organizations (HIPOT-RR) and the end-user (Company HYB) are in Slovenian ownership and are located in the developing region of Slovenia and near the border of the EU. Therefore research project also improved sustain regional development of Slovenia. In additionally, research results and their implementation in the products on the market is a positive example of cooperation between the scientific-research area and the industry. Such positive example is very important to promote similar cooperation in Slovenia. The research project contributed in creation of two new organisation structures. The first is Centre of Excellence NAMASTE (Advanced Materials and Technologies for the Future). This centre is a multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary consortium of research institutions and industry, which include ten research groups, three private research organizations and a number of Slovenian high-tech companies. The partners are distributed almost in all Slovenian regions. The second is Development Centre IN.Medical (Innovative Medical Systems and Treated Methods), which was founded in the year 2011 and it is located in South-Eastern region of Slovenia. The dissemination of the research results increases the reputation of the Slovenian research institutions in the European research area.
