Significance for science
The aim of the present study was to gather the data on possible mercury impact on development of children. Besides the toxic effect of mercury we were also interested in other toxic substances and their impact on development, as well as about the possible protectice role of the diet. With the gathered adat we will be able to prepare the guidelines/recommendations for healthy diet during pregancy. Developmental-psychological characteristics will be compared with the socio-economic factors and we will get he data about other possible conributing factors, important for early child's development.
The most important is that the data collected and analyzed will be used together with the similar data from other regions of Adriatic sea (Rijeka, CRO and Udine, It) and will be published as a final report of the international project PHIME - Public health impact of long-term, low-level mixed element exposure in susceptible population strata (PHIME) Project no. FOOD-CT-2006-016253.
Significance for the country
This was an unique opportunity to gathre data on developmental-psychological characteristics of slovenian toddlers, and the frequency of different behavioral patterns, related to autism in our population of toddlers. Such a large research was never done in Slovenia. The gathered data will be also used for reference values for further psychological and developmental studies, and for follow-up assesments of developmental outcomes.
Within our project:
we have translated and adapted developmental psychological test Bayley III (Bayley Scales of infant and Toddler Development, Third Ed.)
specifically for this project we have translated and adapted
Scale for cognitive development
Scale for speech development
Scale for motor development
Scale for adaptive behaviour
Scale for social-emotional development
We have also got the permissoon of the author herself - Ms Diane Robins - for translation and adaptation of the screening test for autism in toddlers - M-CHAT (The modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers).
We have performed 2-day Seminar presenetd by Ms Betty Hutchon, who is a certified instructro for use of test Bayley III. The seminar was organized for the students of the psychology, who have paticipated in our project with assesing the psychological level of our toddlers included in the study.
We have also performed a workshop for students to get the practical experiences in assessing the psychological development of toddlers in our group.
Each student has got also individual instructions for asessments of toddlers as this was the only way to have equal and unified criteria of assessments of the whole group, and all the students have been individually asessed for their correctness in the assessment.
