Significance for science
Infection with the bacterium H. pylori affects a large proportion of the population have a significant effect on her health. Today there is no known effective vaccine against this bacterium, although this could represent an important weapon against diseases associated with infection. The project will use a number of important achievements of molecular immunology, while it tested new ideas that will contribute to the understanding of the immune system. The proposed research will answer important questions in the fields of life sciences especially in medically important processes. Knowledge about the molecular mechanism of TLR activation are important for understanding the functioning of innate immunity. We anticipate that we will be able to explain the molecular mechanism of signaling through TLR5.
Significance for the country
Effective vaccines against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori could be important for improving health, on the other hand, for the development of biotechnology in Slovenia. The project has direct relevance to society through the achievement of high level international science and education of highly qualified staff, who are the best investment for economic development. From previous research on the project, we have already submitted two patent claims. Potentially useful results we intend to protect the patents, which allows the sale or licensing or formation of an enterprise that would take advantage of these results. The project introduces some innovative methods and new technologies. We will inform the public on our results. An innovative approach to solving the problem represents a base for innovations, which will be protected and as such available for the transfer into the economy. In the project we intend to include young researchers and graduate students, thereby contributing to an increase in the number of highly qualified and skilled personnel.
