Significance for science
Implemented project represents a globally innovative approach in the area of data and information integration and usage. Its results contribute to the science in the emerging area of semantic technologies based on advanced data collection from diverse data sources, acquisition of formal knowledge from unstructured data with the use of ontologies, and advanced personalized presentation of knowledge. Project results have a significant and lasting impact on the area of capturing and serving of formal knowledge, and contribute to the development of science with original and innovative solutions in areas related to the capturing of semantically tagged data and displaying these data in a personalized way in context-sensitive form. Scientific results of the project address the automatic updating of ontologies on the basis of new knowledge derived from semantically enriched unstructured data, thereby enabling the evolution of the provided solution. Despite the fact that the existing frameworks for processing of unstructured data offer many features, they provide only a basic presentation of these data. Results of the project allow the presentation of data, information and derived knowledge according to user preferences, while still taking into consideration the broader context of the presentation, including the technological limitations of device for displaying knowledge and its transmission over communication channel. The project obtained data through existing framework Apache Droids, which was adapted to the specific domain. This data was processed by UIMA framework in a way that allows the processing of unstructured data in the Slovenian language. In addition to the extensions of the framework and proposals for improvements of OASIS UIMA standard in terms of evolutionary operation, the project developed a tool for the morphological tagging of data in form of a dictionary, which is crucial in the process of extracting formal knowledge from unstructured data. The storage of the semantically enriched data in the search index is a special challenge, since the most advanced indexes (Apache Lucena, Solr, Nutch) do not support the indexing of such data. Therefore, the project extended the selected framework Solr, so that it can store this type of data. The project addressed and extended some aspects that are part of the ongoing work in Networked European Software and Services Initiative (NESSI) which is focused on semantic technologies. Project directly addressed multiple NESSI research priorities, including service engineering, openness of solutions and integration of technology into society. Thus, the results of the project can be used in semantic technology working group. Project concepts and solutions are also consistent with the objectives and policies of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within the 7FP. Results of the project contribute to new knowledge in the field of Capturing tractable information because the project involves capturing of data from various sources of arbitrary types, data analysis, extraction of new knowledge (extraction of entities and relations among them) and the enrichment of knowledge in terms of identification of content based on domain ontologies. In addition, the project results contribute to the development of the science in the field of rules modelling, simulation and visualization, since it uses advanced approaches to visualization. In the area of interfaces and integration technologies, project reused existing standards and extended them in the direction related to the integration of semantic content and quality of service (Semantic Service Oriented Architecture). Project used the extended service bus (Enterprise Service Bus), which may affect the further development of service protocols such as SOAP. We extended this specification by defining additional SOAP headers for the transmission of relevant data from back-end systems.
Significance for the country
With this project, we have addressed a very wide scope of potential users, covering the vast majority of legal entities acting in the market, such as interest groups, media and also individuals. Specifically, we have focused mainly on expert users from various areas of expertise. Project results include a key tactical and strategical tool that serves to support decision making and also developing new and innovative solutions. In this context we can look at the implemented solution as one of key tools for improving competitive advantages of companies and therefore their market position. Those advantages are directly reflected in financial results, which are especially important in times of economic crisis. The results of our project are most valuable to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), because they enable them to acquire detailed in-depth data analysis, which previously they were not able to get due to the high cost. Results of the project also open a whole new dimension in areas of fast and efficient response to market demands, taking advantage of new arising opportunities and risk management. Project results provide an effective tool for adapting various contents, which also enables cooperation and consecutively increases their added value. They enable companies to detect market demands more efficiently and respond to them in a much shorter time. Project results stimulate adoption of innovative practices and technologies that represent a key factor for success of Slovenian economy, which mainly consists of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Slovenian companies face a consistent leak of knowledge due to an unstructured approach to knowledge management. Results of the project present them with new ways of thinking to create a solid foundation for growth of innovative ideas. Furthermore, the project also addressed one of the key directives provided by development Strategy of information society development in Slovenia - si2010, namely Usage of Slovenian language and preservation of cultural identity. Results of the project are designed to preserve Slovenian language because they work with the textual sources in Slovenian language. In accordance with this, developed tools perform natural language processing of these texts taking Slovenian grammar and spelling into consideration. While there are several other tools available for other languages, very little of them support Slovenian language and none of them applies to the specific context of the project. Project results also offer great possibilities for accessing knowledge. Acquired knowledge, which is based on intelligent semantics and data analysis, combines content from various existing unstructured sources containing large amount of useful information. Enriched knowledge in progressive quality is provided by researching, indexing, categorizing and summarizing of content. This knowledge is efficiently presented to users in order to fulfil their individual requirements. Project results promote continuous learning, education and qualification. Intelligent decision making is used to determine content and presentation of information. This ensures efficient and goal-driven search and retrieval of information, leading to improved extraction of new knowledge. Project results also provide a trustworthy working environment that enables cooperation. Subsequently, results can be used to improve competitive position of Slovenian economy, rationalize and more efficiently distribute workflows. Results also provide potential to increase country’s economy contribution to European and world’s society. Indirect effect of the project can also be found in improved standard of living due to its direct effects on financial results of companies which ensures added value and increased (economic) growth.
