Significance for science
The research project is a continuation of the project called Slovenska pravna terminologija in izdelava razlagalnega in normativnega slovarja pravnega izrazja (Slovenian Legal Terminology and the Compilation of an Explanatory and Normative Dictionary of Legal Terminology), which laid the foundations for the research and management of Slovenian legal terminology. It will be assembled in the dictionary Pravni terminološki slovar (Dictionary of Legal Terminology), which will be a direct result of the research projects. This will be the first monolingual explanatory dictionary to be up-to-date with respect to social and political circumstances. Despite the fact that there has been a strong presence of the research on Slovenian legal terminology since the 2nd half of the 19th century when Slovenian legal terminology started to be formed in a systematic manner until today, there is no terminological dictionary collecting and systematising Slovenian legal terminology except for the dictionary Pravni terminološki slovar (Dictionary of Legal Terminology), published in 1999, which only contains material gathered until 1991 and is therefore out-of-date considering current needs regarding the terminology. Therefore, the aim of the research project was to form a relatively stable legal terminology system. Systematised and fixed terminology is the basis of each advanced scientific discipline since it enables effective professional communication; in law, on which the entire social system is based, this is particularly important. The dictionary Pravni terminološki slovar (Dictionary of Legal Terminology) will be the only modern Slovenian legal terminology dictionary. It was conceived as a linguistic reflection of Slovenian legal order and will systematise the terminology on the level of meaning and expression. The project was designed and carried out as interdisciplinary, which will contribute to a high level of trustworthiness of the dictionary. Legal experts, particularly lecturers at Slovenian faculties of law, participated in the project, which ensures that the terminological system as represented in the dictionary will gain ground in practice as well.
Significance for the country
Legal terminology has the widest range of users – Slovenian citizens – since all members of the society are bound by law as a regulatory and normative system. The unfamiliarity with legal terminology caused by a number of factors – among these, the fact that legal terminology is created, to a large extent, by means of terminologisation of general vocabulary and the fact that there is no modern Slovenian dictionary of legal terminology are of special importance – may threaten legal certainty of an individual who is not aware of the terminologised meaning (he/she only recognises the general meaning) and cannot look it up in a reliable terminological dictionary. This was the starting point for the idea implemented in the project, i.e. the attempt to systematise Slovenian legal terminology and to establish a relatively stable terminological system contributing to more effective communication in law and consequently to more stable legal relationships in the society. The dictionary Pravni terminološki slovar (Dictionary of Legal Terminology), as the result of the research project, defines legal meanings and systematises relations between legal meanings and pays attention to the terminology being appropriate from the point of view of the language system. Therefore, it will be useful for all members of society who wish to or should know more about Slovenian legal terminology. It will be particularly helpful to legal experts and law students.
