Significance for science
The aim of this research project is to comprehensively analyze exposure situations for those workplaces/professions, where high risk of EMS overexposure is expected, particularly in telecommunications, industry and medicine. Based on the literature workplaces/professions in these branches are expected to be the most esxposured. Numerical calculation of SAR in the whole body and in vital body organs will be calculated for different exposure scenarios. Digital anatomical model of ana adult male and a pregnant woman will be used.
Till now no systematic parametric analysis of localized SAR values in different body parts and vital organs (eye, brain, heart, liver, lungs, kidney, spinal cord) has been performed for boudary conditions, which are present in real exposure situations for high occupational exposures. This is particularly the case with assesment of SAR levels in simultaneous exposure to several EMF frequencies. Based on this analysis, it will be possible to identify the location of interaction inside the human body between the each organ and absorbed energy, thus anticipating which organs are potentially most exposed.
Whenever a numerical method is used to calculate the result, there is always a question in the confidence of the results. One of the possible procedures to increase the confidence is validation. In the project we will compare the results of the calculation of current density with the results of the measurements of total current throug different cross-sections of human body. Measurements will be performed under the same exposure conditions as the numerical calculation.
Importand scientific contribution of the project is development of the dosimetric model fo the pregnant woman in her last three months of gestation. The model will allow analysation of other exposure situations and comparison of the results with results of other research groups in the world. Because of the relevance of the problem of the model of pregnant woman (one of the priorities of WHO in the field of EMF protection) right now several other research groups are working on the model of pregnant woman.
Significance for the country
Providing safe and healthy working environment is responsibility of the employer. Because of the near implementation of national legislation the employers will be also legally bonded to evaluate also the exposure of empowers to the EMF.
When preparing national legislation it is essential to know all the implications for the employers, employees as well as for the corresponding ministry. The detailed results of the project, which identify those professions in each branch, where overexposures are possible, are a basis for the complete analysis of all consequences of the problem, including also financial aspect of the eventual measures, needed to decrease the occupational exposure.
By the development of the methods for overexposure evaluation and identification, slovenian companies will prepare risk assessment easily and more affordable. The prepared risk assessment for six most exposed workplaces will make things easier.
During the period of the project, exposure evaluation centre will be funded. It will be available for the companies to calculate and validate the exposure to EMF for their employees. Numerilcal calculations of the exposures generated by EMF fields will provide fast and effective tool for checking the occupational exposure.
The results of the project will serve also for the preparation of the national program of health protection and prevention of the people, working with EMF sources. They will also slovenian employers to prepare risk assessment due to the exposure to EMF in an easy, affordable and professional manner. Beside financial benefit of slovenian economy, this should decrease the probability of occupational illnes, connected with EMF, and thus contribute to the overall health care and quality of life.
