Significance for science
By developing new prototype electropermeabilization devices we enable the use of a wider spectrum of electrical parameters for research on cell membrane electropermeabilization and thus pioneer work in the field of electropermeabilization, a clearer insight into the method, and optimization of existing applications in biotechnology and medicine. Research with the combination of electrical pulses was already expanded from gene electrotransfer to inactivation of bacteria in water, equivalent pulse parameters for electroporation, electrofusion, and electroporation of endocytotic vesicles and mitohondria.
Significance for the country
The results acquired within the project were presented at scientific conferences and submitted as articles to SCI-ranked journals which contributes to the further increase in scientific prominence of the research group, as well as of the Republic of Slovenia as a whole. The knowledge acquired during the course of the project was transfered to the education process through an international postgraduate course Electroporation based technologies and treatments, and through the education program within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. With the development of highvoltage nanosecond generators we have become one of the few groups in Europe that can produce such devices for applications in biotechnology.
