Significance for science
The field that was a subject of the proposed postdoctoral project is markedly multi-disciplinary and thus very complex. The proposed project was enable me to get new research experiences and knowledge important for an accurate understanding of behavior of timber structures during fire. On this basis, a mathematical model and a computer program for an accurate stress-strain analysis of timber structures subjected to static loading and hypothetical fire were derived. Due to the fact, that such a model does not exist in the literature, the developed numerical model contribute considerably to the understanding of behavior of timber structures during fire. Scientifically original results were published as scientific papers in the recognized international journals and presented at the numerous domestic and international scientific and technical conferences. This way, the formal and informal co-operation with the researchers from Czech Republic and Finland will enhance, and some new co-operation with the researchers and scientific (research) institutions from this field may be created. The results of such co-operation might be various bilateral international and European research projects. A new knowledge (understandings) will be interposed to the students through different diplomas, masters and doctorates and thus will considerably influenced on the education and development of new scientific cadre on this field. Besides, the investigation (new findings) will considerably contribute to the development of knowledge in the field of modeling and calculating the fire resistance of timber structures. Research experiences that I have received during the proposed postdoctoral project will definitelay have a significant influence on my future scientific and research work.
Significance for the country
(i) Nowadays, climate changes (global warming) are becoming more and more imposing problem. Consecutively, the use of wood as an appropriate and convenient constructional material will be rapidly increased in the following decades. Because of this, the number of timber structures will rise drastically. Parallel to this increase, a number of related disasters, like fire, will also increase. The research results enable a better understanding of the behavior of timber structures when exposed to fire. This means, that such structures are designed to be more safe, economic, environment- and human-friendly which means equivalently less human casualties, less constructional material, less production energy and thus lower constructional costs. From the social-economic and cultural development point of view (a protection of natural and cultural heritage), the proposed research results will be most (very) important. (ii) One of the most important design requirements for timber structures is their fire resistance, which, because timber is a highly combustible material, still presents a high risk for investors and conservative designers. On the basis of the research results, I showed, that from the fire-resistance point of view, timber structures are very convenient structures. This would probably increase an interest for timber structures. Consequently, this would influence beneficially on some companies that are or they will be concerned with timber structures and all that belongs to them. (iii) The proposed research and the developed computer tools are based on the latest findings and thus they very useful for many technological improvements. The latest is very important from the view of technological development of the society, branch, different companies and enterprises. (IV) Collaboration with numerous researchers and research institutions, which are concerned with similar problems; this way, the access to their knowledge and data bases are feasible (possible). (V) The results of the abovementioned collaborations could be various applications for different bilateral and European research projects. (VI) Promotion of the state, university and research field at various international and domestic technical and scientific conferences and meetings. (VII) An interposition of research methods and results on the students (future designers) through different diplomas, masters and doctorates and interposition of new knowledge and methods on technical workers through formal and informal meetings of experts. (VIII) It (the project) enables the control, improvement and completion of actually proposed standard Eurocode 5 for design of timber structures.
