Significance for science
The relevance of the researches dealing with the exposures of the children to the EMF is reflected in a different important international workshops and meetings in the last few years (Workshop “Do Children Represent a Special Sensitive Group for EMF-Exposure?” Stuttgart, Germany, 27th - 29th November 2006, ICNIRP/WHO/BfS International Workshop on Risk Factors for Childhood Leukemia, Berlin, Germany, May 5-7, 2008 International Conference on Non-Ionizing Radiation and Children's Health, 18 - 20 May 2011, Ljubljana, Slovenia) as well as in the review of the literature: the number of published articles dealing with this problem in last few years is greater than for all previous publications. Despite increased interest in the research of EMF and children, the combined exposure situation for children is not well analyzed. By the results of our research, an important contribution has been added to the knowledge of the typical exposures of the children and their time patterns. As some numerical anatomical models of the children are already available, numerical dosimetry of the children is already used in research institutions. However, accessibility of the models of the pregnant women is minimal and therefore the exposure of children in the period before the birth is quite unknown. Currently there are only a few anatomical models of the pregnant woman and even these are not freely available for research use. However, only using such models it is possible to analyze the exposures of the children in the period before the birth. An important outcome of this project, the anatomical model of the pregnant woman, has been partially developed in this project.
Significance for the country
Already a the planning stage the project was not primarily oriented to directly support the industry, still some results of the results have also been practically used. The results of the measurements in the vicinity of transformer substations were used for the planning of the reconstruction of some transformer substation, ensuring the reduction of exposure of the nearby inhabitants. Besides, the results also increased the awareness of this problem and the knowledge of the responsible people in electric distribution companies. The analysis of the results already show that the exposure of the participants, which claimed to live close to the sources of low-frequency fields (power lines or transformer substations) are actually much more exposed to low-frequency fields than other participants. To ensure a healthy living environment and in to follow the National program for cancer control in Slovenia 2010 - 2015 (http://www.mz.gov.si/fileadmin/mz.gov.si/pageuploads/zakonodaja/strategije_2010/Dr%C5%BEavni_program_obvladovanja_raka_2010-2015.26.2.2010.pdf) which states that although there is not enough evidence of carcinogenicity yet it is necessary to apply the precautionary principle, the results are excellent indicator that planning of the low-frequency field sources is important. Beside compliance with the current regulation it is important that also the precautionary principle is taken into account during the planning to minimize the exposure of the population with minimal additional resources.
