Significance for science
In the last few decades in the fields of philosophy, sociology and in other fields that are concerning culture and art, a belief has been put forward that in contemporary society we are witnessing important changes, which are directly or indirectly evident in contemporary art and culture. From the wider aspect of the democratization of society as well as from the narrow aspect of art and culture, it is extremely important to understand this “paradigmatic shift” denoted by various terms as postmodernity, post-fordism, flexible accumulation, globalization, glocalization, rhizomaticity etc. Because the society after this “shift” is to a high degree mainly defined by the so-called pictorial turn, the field of the visual gains the dominant role in the context of art and culture, as well as in the society as a whole – if we refer to the processes of mapping, simulation and spectacularization. The research is conceptualized in the very intersection of the mentioned problems and presents a great contribution to the development of this scientific field. After all the changes that we have witnessed, there is an impression arising that in contemporaneity the theoretical reflection of the fields of art and culture is not possible any more, that everything is possible and allowed and that any possibility for an authentic comprehension of art and culture has been irreversibly lost. The research successfully reverses this presumption and in such a manner not only demonstrates that it delivers themes that are of a great actuality for contemporaneity, but also that these themes are of a great importance for Slovenian and international scientific field. This is however especially obvious if one considers the fact that the research thematizes the issues of globalization and global capital and the place of art and culture within this frame. With discussing the roles of technologies, production of knowledge and hybridization in the fields of art and culture the research is concerned with the crucial problems of contemporaneity. Additionally, in such a manner its essential contribution is emphasized: art is a constitutive part of (today global) society and it should be comprehended in this regard. The research is dedicated to role and place of art in contemporary society, especially culture of the late capitalism and the processes of globalization. New scientific approaches to comprehension of art and culture of contemporaneity are opening through the analysis of the features of art as are the networking and hybridization, the increased level of interactivity and the principle of experimentation; especially because with contextualization the research tightly links the artistic practices and modes of functioning with the new modes of production and culture of capitalism and thus maps and analysis the contemporary art. This emphasis on the scientific analysis and definition of contemporaneity of the work of art brings an important contribution to the establishment of the criteria, methodology and the contexts for the recognition of contemporary art practices. The research enables a new insight into interdisciplinary, net-based and experimental procedures of contemporary art and places them in the political, economic and cultural context of the changes from the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. In such a manner it offers a more accurate and analytical recognition of the global and Slovenian art practices, assures a critical analysis of the place of art in the global currents and demonstrates the ambivalent relation of art to capitalism. The research contributes an important awareness that art could not be considered separately from its global cultural and economic conditions and delivers theoretical and reflexive tools for detection of these kinds of connections.
Significance for the country
The research provides complex and contextual comprehension of contemporary, especially socially-engaged art, which is not subordinated to the market logic and which addresses the social subjects with the relevant issues. Transart is significantly connected with other social fields and disciplines (natural, social sciences, humanities, humanitarian institutions etc.), but its position in the national system is not yet properly assured. With a comprehensive explanation of such practices, which has not been offered before, the results of the research inform the society and the professionals who communicate art with wider public. The research significantly contributes to enriching the level of culture in Slovenia and brings a political appeal for responsible and careful national policies referring to the socially-engaged art. Several case studies refer to art in Slovenia (Marko Peljhan, Dragan Živadinov, Miha Turšič. Dunja Zupančič, Sašo Sedlaček, BridA, Andrej Kamnik, Vinko Globokar, son:DA, NSK, Goran Bertok, Polona Tratnik), thus the research contributes a lot to better understanding of our contemporary culture. It demonstrates that in Slovenia transart is strongly present, especially through the endeavors of Kapelica Gallery and its manager Jurij Krpan, however the infrastructure to support the production, structural and logistic realization, is lacking. The research results help to solve these problems, with the theoretical consideration of the structures, principles of functioning and the meaning of art’s appearance and support. Especially through cooperation with the Ministry of Culture systemic solving will be enabled on the basis of this research, e.g. with linking the ministries (MC with Ministry of Science and Technology and/or Ministry for Education, and others), which could establish a platform for the support of the complex transdisciplinary projects in the intersection of art-technoscience-humanities (and/or social sciences), which is not yet enabled. Establishing the latter is as well very important for the international promotion of Slovenia through culture; that is however proven already with the strong international establishment of the agents in this field who are being inscribed in the very top of the world production of contemporary art – foreign cultural as well as scientific (and even political – in the case of the project Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies for the culturalization of space) institutions show outstanding interest for transart. Additionally the research is the basis for the establishment of the network between the ministries, which can help in the realization of the future applicative (also basic) research projects in this direction, which would for example help with introducing transart among the youth in primary, secondary schools, kindergartens, cultural institutions, as well as including the transart practices in the regular research projects, the practice recently introduced in the EU, especially in the point of communication of project results with public, which is extremely important for the development of science. The results of the research have been already mediated to the society through the professionalization of the workers in education (with over 100 hours in total), through the syllabus for introducing intermedia art to education (managed by the Institute for Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, which was published in 2011), as well as through other pedagogical processes (University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities, Department for Cultural Studies; School for the Critics of Photography), invited lectures, published books, book chapters and articles, interviews, cultural engagements of different sorts, organization of the conferences (within the Slovenian Society of Aesthetics) and paper presentations etc. The promotion of Slovenia abroad is assured by the intense international activity of the researcher in the fields of science and culture.
