Abstract
The subject of the project is the phraseology of the German and Slovene language, especially the synchronous contrastive and intercultural aspects. ¦ The starting point of the project is the fact, that the phraseology of the German and Slovene language has been so far investigated synchronously only in fragments and that, consequently, no theory-based methodology, no empirically verified and credible research results exist, that would show the complex inter-linguistic situation of the German-Slovene integration and divergence in the field of contemporary phraseology. The current deficit in the contrastive research of today's use of the German and Slovene language is as a result of the local contact area of the two languages and historically conditioned by the interlingual and intercultural influence on the border between Slovenian and the German speaking area much more evident. With regard to the history of Slovene linguistic research, which was up to the second half of the 20 century highly tied to the German speaking area of linguistics, and so at least partially contrastively based, this deficit is to a certain point incomprehensible. ¦ According to that the chosen theme of the project is relevant to the linguistics in Slovenia, since the expected results of the contrastive analysis of both languages on the phraseological field are important and will enrich the knowledge of the comparative aspects of the Slovene language, in addition to that the results will be applicable to applied linguistics, especially in the fitting-out of the Slovenian language with bilingual German-Slovene dictionaries and other materials, which in the current situation show significant weaknesses. Project work will focus on (1) the compiling and composition of two experimental language corpora, the German-Slovene phraseological material and to (2) synchronous oriented German-Slovene contrastive analysis of the corpora collected material, with the formal syntax, semantic-pragmatic, cultural, sociolinguistic, lexicographic, cognitive and psychological aspects. We will select current theoretical positions and use established research methods in individual research levels. ¦ An important part of the project are also (3) dissemination activities. Among the expected results we want to expose the following, which show a high degree of originality, represent an innovation in the existing linguistic research, contribute significantly to the importance of research topics in Slovene area and fill the gap in synchronic contrastive research on the selected language pair: - methodology of corpus acquisition of phraseological data, - quantitative and qualitative upgrading of the existing collections of German and Slovene phraseological  material, - contrastive typology of variants of phraseological structures, - contrastive typology of syntax connectors for integration of paremiological structures in a text, - semantic and cultural contrastive analysis of the collected data, - contrastive analysis of the collected data by selected societal aspects, especially typology, -  clarify of selected problems of phraseology in the process of acquiring and/or language learning and their lexicographic reading.   The expected results will form the basis and catalyst for further contrastive research of both languages, and practically usable in the field of lexicography, assembling language databases, and in the field of learning and teaching both language as a foreign language. In some parts (upgrading the existing language databases for both languages, issues in lexicographic treatment of phraseology) meaningful project activities relate to other projects and programs, upgrading them and making an important contribution to the synchronization of research, enabling synergy effects and optimizing the results of the research work.
Significance for science
The project results are significant for: (1) Advancements in the field of German studies with regard to Phraseology and linguistically-oriented Paremiology. The prevailing synchronous-contrastive research perspectives contribute to structural, semantic, pragmatic and societal knowledge of phrasemes and proverbs in both languages. The research perspectives facilitate new theoretical realisations in the field of Contrastive Phraseology (German and Slovene in contact), emphasise the intercultural aspect and hint at directions for future research; (2) Developing phraseology-and-paremiology-oriented (foreign) language teaching didactics. The survey of policy documents and learner's materials, and the proposed transferable stage model for learning the phraseology of a foreign (German) language are considered as project results elevating the quality of learner's materials and the treatment of phraseological and culturological content in teaching; (3) Advancements in the field of Metalexicography, Phraseography and Paremiography in particular, and in procedures for acquiring, evaluating and selecting linguistic data for lexicographic purposes. Criteria for identifying, interpreting and selecting (con)textual data accessible in corpora and applicable for the lexicographic treatment of German phrasemes represent a novelty in theoretical lexicography. The development of a modular microstructure for the lexicographic description of proverbs and the content-specific, technical concept designed to properly display selected phraseology the web, contribute to the advancement of digital language sources for teaching and translation purposes; (4) Advancements of interdisciplinary phraseological research. – The contrastive approach facilitates the inclusion of Slovene in the process of studying German phraseology, influencing Slovene phraseological-paremiological research in a positive manner. The approach revealed a distinction between both fields of study, facilitating more accurate and aim-oriented research endeavours. A survey of Slovene scientific publications revealed the importance for supplementing the Slovene terminology specific for the fields of Phraseology and Paremiology. – The project-based international scientific conference, organised in collaboration with the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology (ZRC SAZU), infused the primarily linguistic topic with ethnography, adding new possibilities for interdisciplinary research and synergies. – Collaborating IT specialists laid the foundation for the development of phraseology-and-phraseography-specific web applications, aimed at adding methodological diversity to phraseological studies of modern languages. (5) The study on the current use of German proverbs was based on sociolinguistic aspects (parameters such as age, level of education, type of educational institution (school), location and dialect were considered in the survey). Such approaches are rare in the Slovene scientific community, which is why this part is regarded as an important addition to research endeavours in the sense of methodology and content. The approach places the study among comparable research, focused on other languages. (6) The cognitive approach applied in the contrastive observation of phraseology between contact languages (which may be similar or different with regard to typology and origin), represents added value in terms of determining instances of interlinguistic and intercultural convergence and divergence in the Central European cultural sphere; as practical means of advancement and development with regard to foreign language teaching didactics (teaching German as a foreign language in particular); as a support mechanism for improving the quality of documents regulating the field of foreign language teaching (curricula, syllabuses and learner's materials): and as an aid in teacher education (raising awareness about the role of phraseology in everyday communication).
Significance for the country
The project results are important for the Slovenian scientific sphere for: (1) Further culturologically-and-interculturally-oriented phraseological and paremiological research with the intent to highlight interlinguistic and intercultural relations between two contact languages with a rich history of mutual influence and with regard to the present-day areal and social contact between them; (2) Further development of interdisciplinary approaches towards studying the current form and use of German as a foreign language, or both contact languages respectively, in the sense of applying diverse research approaches (such as the sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, cognitive and corpus-based approach); (3) Applying linguistic technologies in studying current language use in order to ensure applicable data for further lexicographic or phraseographic endeavours respectively, particularly to provide the Slovenian environment with quality and up-tp-date bilingual German-Slovene reference materials, which are crucial for teaching and learning German as a foreign language and translating between the language pair of Slovene and German; (4) Further development of new knowledge and skills in the field of language teaching/learning, particularly with regard to teaching German as a foreign language in Slovenia and translating/interpreting between both languages in order to ensure an appropriate quality of work in both professional fields; (5) Propelling Slovenian theoretical knowledge (the Slovenian naturalness theory, metalexicographic results) to an international level of theoretical and applicative research in the field of Phraseology and Paremiology; (6) Transferring methods and results of research in the field of Phraseology and Paremiology of a foreign (German) language to research approaches focused on the language of Slovene; (7) Enabling a comparative view on Slovene and German terminology and further development of Slovene terminology in selected fields; (8) Further establishment of Slovenian academic linguistic studies of the German language at the University of Maribor in the international scientific sphere, particularly in the sense of publishing papers in foreign languages, publishing papers in foreign scientific literature and organising international project-related scientific conferences.
