Significance for science
Climate cange is one of the main research challenges, with adaptation issuess coming in the focus of attention only recently. Due to its transsectoral and integrative nature spatial planning potentially has a key role in adaptation. Nevertheless there have been only few systematic analyses done or tools developed to improve adaptation through spatial planning. This project developed method for vulnerability assessemnt, which enables a systematic and internationally comparable analysis of situation in the area as well as helps developing adaptation measures. It aslo brought an upgrade for policy analysis including climate change adaptation. Beside these tools, the main contribution of the project is in the conceptual integration between climate change research framework (natural scence) and spatial planning (social science).
Significance for the country
Project resulted in newknowledge in the field of climate change, which is, as one of the key challenges, the subject of policies and strategies of mitigation and adaptation. While mitigation measures are largely agreed on the internatiional level and transposed in the states legislation, the adaptation measures are left to the national governemnts. Slovenia is in the phase of preparation climate legislation and strategy, which will also include adaptation measures. The project results have been internationally verified and adjusted to the Slovenian context and are therefore directly applicable for these documents. Through its activities in the pilot region (Gorenjska), project also raised awareness about climate change adaptation among regional and local stakeholders, which will improve responsiveness and implementation of measures on sub-national levels.
