Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate the differences in the bereavement process between males and females on the cognitive, emotional, behavioural, social and physical level. The subjects of the study have all suffered the loss of a close family member (parent, partner or child) in the past two years. The study focuses on the strategies the bereaved employ to cope with their loss and the different types of help they have received or sought. Based on the results of the study, we want to present the distinct characteristics and differences in the bereavement process in men and offer suggestions for forming suitable forms of expert help adapted to the male population. Studies conducted so far have mostly been based on female patients and consequently help programmes are adapted to the needs of the female population, which are not necessarily suitable for men.   Based on the review of relevant literature, as well as from practical work with the bereaved, it is believed that a study on the differences in bereavement between men and women is needed in Slovenia.
Significance for science
The aim of this quantitative-qualitative research study was to find out the dynamics of gender differences in the bereaved participants in terms of their emotional, cognitive, physical and behavioural responses. There were not many bereavement studies in Slovenia in the past, so this one tries to connect differet aspects: attachment, coping strategies, posttraumatic growth, problems in bereavemnt, emotional competence in the process of bereavement in the family. A lot of important data were found in the process of bereavement after suicide. Many data were gathered because of a big number of interviewed participants, using the qualitative methodology. The results are specific for Slovenia, even though some of them confirm previous ones from the international studies. It is important that we prepared the understanding for the development of new programmes to help the bereaved in Slovenia, specifically for the male population of bereaved.
Significance for the country
The reults of the basic research project regarding the males in the process of bereavement ring a lot of new data in the development of scientific knowledge and the professional programmes for the help to the individuals in bereavement. The special importance of this research is to see the defferences in reaction between men and women in bereavement. The aim of this quantitative-qualitative research study was to find out the dynamics of gender differences in the bereaved participants in terms of their emotional, cognitive, physical and behavioural responses. The outcome of this research study was trying to form a new informative system for all the bereaved but with a special stress on the men who showed different needs and strategies in the process of bereavement. This information system should be the enter point to find a proper help or support that the individual bereaved would need, which would help to decrease the sick leave of the bereaved, better coping with their problems, less forming of the chronic problems and an increase of productivity .
