Abstract
The project will include the development of a Slovene Internet portal comprising an overview of all the existing Slovene grammars so far published (except for some less significant grammars that were published as school manuals), the most important grammars in a manuscript form and all the orthographical dictionaries. Furthermore, the portal will contain articles which will give a more detailed and in-depth presentation of selected grammars and all the orthographical dictionaries while following the format and outline of the international portal CTFL with some modifications which are required to incorporate the specific features of the Slovene grammars. A special attention will be given to the following aspects: the extent and structure of the grammar or orthographical dictionary; the main data on the author; a survey of the content; the significance and expansion of the grammar or orthographical dictionary among its readers; the problems around the choice of the examples used in individual grammars; exploration of the aims and goals of the author of a particular grammar or orthographical dictionary; the role of a particular grammar or orthographical dictionary in the history of the Slovene linguistics; terminological innovations; general description of the idiosyncrasies of a particular grammar or dictionary; the influence role of a particular grammar or orthographical dictionary on the further development of grammars or orthographical dictionaries. In collaboration with a French research group, the articles with a more detailed and in-depth presentation of selected grammars will be translated and placed on the international portal CTLF and consequently, the Slovene grammars will be thus broadly presented also to the international scholarly community, particularly to the historians of grammar who are regular users of the portal CTLF.
Significance for science
This project has provided basic tools for further research in the history of Slovenian linguistics. The primary research of Slovene grammars and the collection of primary data on orthographical dictionaries has been be conducted by applying up-to-date methodology. Due to the new methodological approach and synthetic and syncretic research a series of innovative results and insights have been achieved during the preparation of compact information on individual grammars. These texts will give a foundation for further investigations and a base for the general history of linguistics in Slovenia, an area which has not been developed so far. The establishment of such foundations will allow the development of new directions for future research to be initiated after publishing the portal of Slovenian grammars and orthographical dictionaries. The more significant outcomes of the research will be soon presented on the Web (www.fran.si/slovnice-in-pravopisi) and freely available to the domestic and international community. It can be presumed that also the articles included on the electronic base CTLF will receive international attention due to the credibility of CTLF. Consequently, the unavailability of the information on Slovene grammars among Slovene and international public will be remedied. Only through the outcomes of this project it will be possible for the researchers who do not know Slovene to include Slovene grammars among the surveys of grammars of individual nations. Up to date, Slovenes have been for the most part excluded from such surveys (with the exception of the grammar of Fran Miklošic who has a significant position by himself); the reason for this lies in limited access of data on characteristics of individual grammars which would interest international researchers. It is anticipated that those research works which will be given as representative in the survey of literature in the form of individual articles will receive response (domestic and international) since they will occur automatically in the bibliography of the base CTLF and in the bibliography of the base Slovenske slovnice in pravopisi. The significance of the outcomes of our (just finished) project about the history of linguistics in Slovenia is evident from the fact that the historians of Slovene linguistics – if compared with the history of linguistics of other nations – should have had those data collected and presented to the international community long time ago.
Significance for the country
The project has beeen particularly significant for the cultural development and preservation of the cultural heritage and national identity. Through the primary research of the history of linguistics the level of knowledge of the history of linguistics in Slovenia is being enhanced. The project has also an important role in the improvement of the infrastructure in the area of the history of linguistics in Slovenia and in the enhancement of the basic data on Slovene grammars and orthographical dictionaries which are now available to the Slovene and international linguistics. The outcomes of the project will also contribute to an improved access to the digitalised sources for the history of Slovene grammars a. Such materials will essentially increase awareness about the Slovene linguistics among the national as well as the international community.
