Abstract
Active distribution networks are one of the main goals of the future development of power systems. The concept of an active distribution network is based on the assumption that in the future the share of energy produced from renewable sources will increase, and that an increasing number of distribution generation units will be connected to the network. This will require different control strategies for distribution networks than the existing ones. For the full implementation of the SmartGrids concept, a (r)evolution in the use of modern IC technologies in an electrical power system will be necessary, whereby upgrades of the existing ICT system from main substations towards practically every end user are expected. Due to the control of this large number of connection points new information solutions, optimization algorithms and control concepts will have to be developed. The objective can be attained only with advanced communication – the final goal is the automation of network that can be controlled and supervised. Bidirectional communication must be established between controllable sources, regulated loads, network controllers, measurement instruments, end users etc.   The company Iskratel will co-finance the proposed project and participate in it as a research organization. The main purpose of the project is to develop active distribution network concepts within an open service platform and define characteristic additional functions for a given domain of the open service platform or to adjust the existing functions that in a given platform enable all the support for domain applications. The service platform provides the northbound interfaces, which are in terms of the type of connection and its content as close as possible to or fully compliant with the standard. These interfaces offer data in basic or federated form - and other information - to portal or other applications, or are required for exchange of information with other networks. This service platform includes basic telecommunication functions and will be upgraded with an information model for different areas of active networks and central data storage for registered users, their applications, devices and policies. The service platform provides the openness and connectivity to the north, consisting of interfaces, which will be available to application developers and target users subject to access policies. The task of the main applicant will be to specify in detail the requirements concerning the information transfer (quantity, time frame, content, standards) in an electrical power system for an individual active network business model. As the ICT solution provider the participating research organization Iskratel will be responsible for the implementation of certain proposed concepts within the service platform.   The main goal of the project is: to define the architecture of the entire intelligent ICT infrastructure in an electrical power system for the purposes of active network concepts, to develop functions within the service platform. When defining the architecture emphasis will be given to the foreseen mass implementation with a large number of potential users.   The mathematical analysis of parts of an electrical power network will be used during research. The completed mathematical models will enable us to define the requirements for individual concepts in terms of quantity and speed of information transfer. The derived algorithms will be tested on the developed models by means of digital simulation. In close cooperation with researchers from Iskratel experimental tests of selected services for active distribution networks within the open service platform are foreseen in the final stage.
Significance for science
• definition of scenarios of functional and performance requirements of the ICT infrastructure in active network • definition of architecture of the complete ICT infrastructure in active network • development of active network concepts within an open service platform • prototype implementation of an open service platform for the needs of active network • verification of the concept and technology of selected functions in a simulation environment in order to support larger capacities • analysis of impact of the user and things mobility in active network
Significance for the country
• transfer of knowledge into practice • potential for industrial property (patents) • introduction of new products and services • better competitive position on foreign markets • new jobs • raising the general quality of life in digital society • availability of active network ICT solutions tailored to the needs of Slovenian distribution networks • innovative service platform will be particularly attractive to small and medium sized enterprises (SME) that could build new applications on top of such platform • training of new staff • possibility of participation in European and other international projects • enhanced national image as a consequence of high-tech production of ICT solutions for active networks (developed countries) • lower prices of ICT solutions for active networks due to market competition • easier implementation of energy policy targets
