Significance for science
The research project was performed in order to investigate the potential beneficial and detriemental effects of hypoxia during prolonged inactivity. Despite the fact that inactivity and hypoxia often interact in clinical patients, there is an obvious lack of systematic studies on the combined effects of both of these factors on different physiological systems. Besides the clinical values this project also provides data on the combined effects of hypoxia and inactivity (simulated microgravity) in healthy individuals which are essential for proper planning of future manned space explorations. Especially, given the fact that future space habitats will expose their inhibitants to both reduced gravity and hypoxia (to reduce the risk of decompression sickness). The present project thus advances our general understanding of the combined effects of hypoxia and inactivity which has applied but also basic scientific value.
Significance for the country
This project enabled the establishement of a Biomedical planetary research centre in the Olympic Sport Center Planica. The centre can now be used for research pertaining to space physiology and future space exploration.
