Abstract
Today, Optical Fiber Communications are becoming the basic infrastructure technology in the communication area. Because of the enormous increase in the needs of communication services optical communications are evolving at an accelerated speed. The development of the end user access network for broadband services as predicted for the next decade will depend largely on the existing copper network according to different evolution scenarios. Technologies and architectures of the optical access network are still in development which is backed by the substantial technological and human resources. For countries like Slovenia which are observing the development it is of utmost importance to take the right decision based on the existing structure and future needs. In view of the huge costs associated with the network development the tehnical as well as economic characteristics of the various options like ADSL, VDSL, FTTC/Cab and FTTH as well as radio should be carefully examined. This research includes the examination of different solutions which are compatible to our specific needs. Computer simulation of some enabling technologies will be implemented.
