Abstract
Surface technology !s a cross- sectional high-tech field of science and plays an important role in many<p>industrial sectors. Especially SMEs have the know how to take this chance to assure jobs and<p>promote the potential of surface technologies.<p>The ECTIST project aims on stimulating the participation of SMEs within the field of 'surface<p>technology' in ED research programmes leading to a more innovation-friendly environment for<p>business. This will be done by identifying and establishing 'surface technology clusters' in the<p>participating countries. The project will identify relevant topics of already funded European and<p>national projects and offer services on an European level for projects as well as for new consortia.<p>There are several steps to reach the aim of this project - the increasing participation of SMEs in the<p>Sixth Framework Programme:<p>establishment of thematic clusters to identify national thematic networks and other intermediaries<p>-thematic investigations on funded FP6 projects and relevant national programmes<p>-service for partner search for running FP6 projects and the establishment of new consortia<p>-Presentation and documentation of ECTIST activities in the internet<p>-identification and contacting of incubators and multipliers in the different sub sectors of surface<p>technology for dissemination activities.<p>The ECTIST consortia concentrates on all relevant subjects of research for the target group across<p>FP6. In addition, the project is in line with other Community policies relevant for innovation and will<p>work to strengthen the focus on all types of innovation as a continuous effort for the 'surface<p>technology' SME in Europe, specifically mentioned under the heading &quot;Coherent development of<p>research and innovation policies&quot;.<p>The partners of the ECTIST project declared the following quantitative aims:<p>Company audits; 20 per year per partner<p>-Workshops; One event each partner<p>New partners for r
