Abstract
The proposed program is a continuation of 14-years research activities of our group. The main idea is based on understanding of the landscape as a cultural phenomenon in the human environment. The proposed research will go beyond that by the establishment of overlapping and intersecting topics with other fields. This approach is crucial and logical for landscape architecture and it defines this discipline as interdisciplinary. This theoretical background and shift in the research focus place the proposed research program in social sciences.
The main goal of the research program is therefore re-thinking understanding of natural elements and processess in the space, whereby we go beyond the traditional (positivistic/empirical) conception. The inovative approach introduces social component in the very construction of landscape as a phenomenon. In relation to this the reasearch also aims to transform and upgrade the existing planning and design methods, where the humans are put in the forefront as the subjecst of landscape transformation and use. Here the objective is improving the friendliness of the methods for policy makers and as the result, increasing the role of landscape in public policies. The third cobjective stays the same as in the previous periods, namely developing the social awareness of the landscape and improving quality of environment through planning practice. The approach here is innovative in connecting nature and social sciences with artistic practices and the field of public mamangement and political co-decision making.
Experience and references of the members of the research group as well as established connections with the researchers, working from the same theroretical bases in other fields ensures integration and identification of key research topics with strongest innovative potential. Since all members of the research group also take part in the teaching process, the research findings will be transfered into landscape architecture coursesas well as disseminated to planning practitioners through the pilot studies and education program of Slovenian Chamber of architecture and spatial planning.
Significance for science
Upgrading of traditional interdisciplinary approach (linking between different scientific fields) to trans-disciplinary is the main scientific value of proposed research program. Synergies with other social areas such as the arts, engineering, and public/political decision making make our research methods more integrative. Confrontiation with non-scientific types of rationality enables critical reflection of validity of scientificaly constructed reality as well as finding innovative solutions in ontological as well as epistemiological sense.
Significance for the country
On national level the socio-economic value of the program is mainly in the direct application of methodological proposals into planning practice carried out already as part of research methodology. One of the expected results is also improvement in the evaluation of public policies and thereby greater quality of spatial planning and design practice. Contribution in these areas has direct economic importance (in terms of lower external costs and greater public benefits in the long term).
Social importance is also reflected in greater awareness of cultural landscapes values and quality of living environment in professional and general public. This awareness ensures the long-term sustainable development of society and has an important impact on national identity.
