Abstract
Methods for determining yield stress and plastic properties of materials by load-depth sensing spherical indentation will be developed. An extensive computational study of various indentation regimes will be performed covering a broad spectra of material properties. An experimental study will be performed in collaboration with researchers from Rice University, Houston, Texas, USA. The methods developed would provide an alternative testing procedure to conventional testing, applicable when the conventional tests are difficult or impossible to perform. This is especially beneficial for monitoring mechanical properties of structures in operation, evaluating regions where high variations in mechanical properties are expected, or performing measurements of very small volumes of material.
