Abstract
Research program P2-0205 ''Synthesis and characterization of materials '' comprehend theory of planning, selection, characterization and material synthesis together with methodology of systematic experiments and research methods. Program is founded on the knowledge of material thermodynamics, process kinetics, phase transformations, material microstructure development and their stability, and other important contents in the field of material science.
Members of the research program are (were) successful in different research fields, such as: Constitution of metal alloys and composites. Rapid solidification and shape memory alloys. Internal oxidation of copper and silver alloys with carbon. Development of metalographic examinatiom methodology. Failure analysis of mechanical parts and eqiupments. Investigations of superplastic properties and behaviour of aluminium alloys. Development of biocompatible metallic materials and their application in dental prosthetics. Researchs in the field of micromechanics of heterogeneous alloys and composites. Metal materials cladding by high energy rates. Development of new steel grades and products. Heat treatment. Numerical modeling of processes. Designing of environmentally-friendly materials, products, processes and technologies.
Research, development and pedagogically work of the members of the research program ''Synthesis and characterization of materials'' is important for development and performance of graduate and postgraduate study programs on the fields of materials science, metallurgy, production technologies and environmental protection.
Members of research program also continuously improve equipment for material researching and characterization. The last success is development of device for detecting microstructure changes. Innovative idea, concept and construction was carried out and controlled by members of the program group in cooperation with Slovenian industry.
With the direct cooperation with the industry we contribute to the technological and economical progress, and to the introduction of new materials, products, processes and technologies.
Significance for science
Research program ''Synthesis and characterization of materials '' comprehend theory of planning, selection, characterization and material synthesis together with methodology of systematic experiments and research methods. Program is founded on the knowledge of material thermodynamics, process kinetics, phase transformations, material microstructure development and their stability, and other important contents in the field of material science, and at the same time it represents a connection with related scientific fields.
In a wider sense the contribution of the program members to a binary and ternary phase diagrams development, phase analysis and internal oxidation are important and respected also abroad. These achievements lead to an international cooperation in a field of internal oxidized and shape memory materials synthesis. Results were published (and will be in the future) in eminent scientific journals.
Analysis of the internal oxidation phenomena as a chemical reaction between solid alloy and atmosphere is the field of material science, where the research group alone or in connection with domestic and foreign institutions contributes significant discoveries.
We are particularly successful in the area of ??synthesis and characterization of superplastic aluminum alloy AA5083 alloy with scandium and zirconium.
The development of a new generation armour plates PROTAC 500 is a successful research project where members of the research program participated in the development of a new product. In the next period we will continue the cooperation in the development of product of the next generation.
Significance for the country
The program P2-0205 is taking care of achieving new knowledge in one of the basic fields of engineering that is tightly connected with the natural science.
The field of our group activity is also interested for some other program groups that we collaborate with in specific areas. Results have influence in continual social and economical development within the pedagogical process on all levels of study, continuous presence in industry and cooperation with other institutions.
Theoretical and experimental work of the group is tightly connected with engineering of materials. Successful and industrial applicable cooperation enabled the group to achieve a part of research equipment and its further exploitations for economy.
We were successful in synthesis and treatment of aluminum and iron alloys. On the field of rapid solidification and shape memory alloys. Internal oxidation of copper and silver alloys with carbon. Failure analysis of mechanical parts and eqiupments. Investigations of superplastic properties and behaviour of aluminium alloys. Development of biocompatible metallic materials and their application in dental prosthetics. Metal materials cladding by high energy rates. Development of new steel grades and products. Heat treatment. Numerical modeling. Designing of environmentally-friendly materials, products, processes and technologies. With research and pedagogical work the group managed to connect following production technologies: process metallurgy, casting, forming, welding, powder metallurgy, heat treatment, surface engineering, nanotechnologies etc.
The research, development and pedagogical activties of members of the research programme "Synthesis and characterization of materials" has important influence on the development and execution of under- and postgraduate studies in the field of materials, metallurgy, production technologies, and environmental protection.
By the direct cooperation with the industry we contribute to the technological and economical progress and to introduction of novel materials and technologies.
The members of the research programme are cooperating in preparing and organization of profesional lectures, seminars and work shops for the industry by which we contribute to the improvement of education level of employees and that they gain new functional knowledge.
