Abstract
The main subject of the project is basic research in the field of experimental particle physics. The work is carried out through active memebership in four collaborations: ARGUS at DESY and ATLAS, CPLEAR and DELPHI at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics CERN near Geneva. Emphasis is given to the study of weak and strong forces of quarks and leptons as well as to the symmetry principles governing the interactions. Special care will be devoted to the development of detection methods and their application to the construction of the ATLAS spectrometer. Part of the work will consist of the transfer of these developments into applications to the field of medical diagnostics and ecology. The research highlights in 1998 were: - radiation hardness studies in the scope of the ATLAS and RD-48 projects, leading to the discovery of bias-dependent radiation damage in silicon bulk, - first direct measurement of time reversal violation in semileptonic neutral kaon decays with the CPLEAR spectrometer, - measurement of QCD predictions at world''s highest energy electron-positron interactions with the DELPHI detector at the Large Electron-Positron collider LEP.
