Significance for science
In the field of thermoplastic materials, the mechanism of self-healing through manipulation of reversible chemical reactions is already a well-established concept, while there are fewer scientific publications and findings in the case of thermoset materials. The main issue presented in so-prepared thermoset materials is high rigidity of materials (high glass transition temperature), which consequently leads to the low mobility of molecules or the ends of molecules in the structure, crucial for the effective interleaving and desired course of reaction. Accordingly, due to the lack of literature in this promising field, any contribution to the development of the concept and clarification of the chemistry of such systems will present additional interest and originality. Self-healing materials is a research branch in its early development range of modern materials and represents one of the key steps in extending the lifespan of materials and enhancing sustainable development. In addition, thermoset resins provide a variety of synthesis options and numerous combinations and crosslinking possibilities. It is possible to prepare many functionalized or multi-functionalized thermosets from a wide range of starting compounds, also from the source of renewable compounds. Not only the lifespan of materials can be prolonged through self-healing ability, but compounds that are already based on renewable sources can be used as a starting material. The obtained results represent a novel and important contribution to the understanding of the chemistry, mechanical and rheological properties of the materials, needed for the introduction of self-healing over reversible connections in thermoset materials. The extension of materials' lifespan is one of the fastest growing and worthwhile scientific branches, which is consistent with the guidelines for sustainable development. The scientific publication from the studied area will additionally promote thermoset materials with self-healing ability and further contribute to extra interest from the scientific sphere. The results will help in the development of efficient and repeatable self-healing of the material. We also expect the promotion of self-healing evaluation methods, as there is still a lack of a simple and non-destructive method for rapid evaluation.
Significance for the country
The performed studies belong to the European priority areas of researching new materials, materials from renewable sources and following the guidelines for sustainable development. This establishes the potential for achieving products with higher added value. The difficulty of content allows research work for graduate and master's students who, due to the relevance of the topic, find the challenge in the research, the need of perseverance, ingenuity and linking knowledge. The implementation of the project is and will contribute to the promotion of the country through scientific articles and the presentation of the results at international scientific meetings. The acquired knowledge will enable to improve the quality of the pedagogical process and contribute to the development of the profession.
