We presented results of the study about transfer of nickel (Ni) from naturally enriched soils (13 soil samples from Slovenian Istria) into vegetables (53 samples). We concluded that vegetables produced in Slovenian Istria do not contribute higher daily intake of Ni as it is with European vegetables, which should be considered when placing soil quality standards for Ni in agricultural soils.

Dietary exposure of different age groups of the inhabitants of the Upper Meža Valley (ZMD) to lead, cadmium and zinc due to the consumption of locally grown vegetables was calculated. Estimated dietary exposure of all age groups is, in the case of lead, greater than the European average, whereas there is no significant difference in cadmium exposure between observed and European population. The estimated exposure to zinc is lower compare to the European average.
