In the frame of FP7 BEWATER »Making society an active participant in water adaptation to global change« (2013-2017, coordinator for Slovenia: doc. dr. Aleksandra Krivograd Klemenčič) a method of innovative process of society transition towards resilient and adaptive water management in Mediterranean river basins was developed; in Slovenia pilot region was Vipava River Basin. Key result for Slovenia is according to the new method developed »Vipava River Basin Adaptation Plan«, which takes into account the envisaged climate changes in river basin management at the local level. River basins adaptation plans were developed also for other river basins in Mediterranean countries in the EU and outside (e.g. Spain, Cyprus, and Tunisia). New developed method is transferrable on other river basins and represents the basis for designing of effective adaptive water management policy together with raising awareness among the local population on the challenges of water management and water use in the light of climate change. Vipava River Basin Adaptation Plan is (will be) already partly implemented in the frame of other EU financial mechanisms such as LIFE projects (ViVaCCAdapt: Adapting to the impacts of Climate Change in the Vipava Valley (2016-2021), which is the first project in Slovenia supported under the LIFE financial instrument for the environment and climate action) and cross-border programme Interreg V-A Slovenia-Italy (two strategic projects - VISFRIM: Flood risk management in the Vipava River Basin and other cross-border river basins (2018-2021), and GREVISLIN: Green infrastructure, conservation and improvement of the state of endangered species and habitat types along rivers) (2018-2021)).
