In the monograph the development of Slovenian geography is presented - in the pedagogical and research field. The first part of the monograph shows the development of world and Slovene geography in the classical period, when geography still had a predominant descriptive character. The second part shows the emergence of modern geography as a science of the distribution of phenomena on the Earth's surface and the mutual relationship between them. Most of the book is devoted to the development of Slovene geography after the founding of the University of Ljubljana and the beginning of the study of geography, with the aim showing how this development was placed in modern world geographical trends. The development of pedagogical geography is presented, as well as changes and emphases over time in various research areas.

COBISS.SI-ID: 301605376Under the auspices of the European Association of Geographers EUROGEO and in cooperation with the Association of Geography Teachers of Slovenia, the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana organized the Hidden Geographies International Conference Slovenia from 29 to 31 August 2019. The response of the international professional public was exceptional, as the conference was attended by close to 150 participants from 32 countries. The members of the Program Group were among the organizers and participants. 113 lectures (of which 4 were invited lectures), 6 workshops ... The conference highlighted the often overlooked fact that most “geographies” are hidden and offered an opportunity to discuss the origins and effects of hidden geographies, awareness of their existence, perception, understanding, interpretation and use in research, education, regional development, decision making, management or in everyday life. Participants found that geographies are hidden because they are invisible to us, deliberately hidden, yet undiscovered because we do not know them, or our “knowledge” is outdated due to the variability of the phenomenon. Hidden geographies can have an extremely strong impact on social and physical phenomena and processes, as well as on our lives. The basic thesis that the role of geography in their discovery, purposeful concealment, recognition of their meanings, understanding, interpretation and presentation is extremely important was confirmed.

COBISS.SI-ID: 71471970The exhibition about s.c. “roma-settlements” in Slovenia present their spatial, cultural and structural features in particular and analyse their developmental problems. Those settlements (just few of them are “settlements” according to statistical criteria!; most of them are just part of other slovene settlement units, but mostly isolated from the slovene surrounding) have some developmental potentials or “capitals” (space, water, soil, cultural features etc.), but rather different experiences in cohabitation within local spatial frames, evidently less economic power and lack of planning formalities. The exhibition exposes the developmental variants particularly (this is in accordance with some basic aims of our research programme) and explain some successful practices and examples. The roma-settlements (and similarly another settlement units settled by marginal social groups) need the adopted developmental programmes much more than the constant minimalistic interventions.

COBISS.SI-ID: 70652002Between June 30 and July 12, 2019, 21 students from 9 countries and 12 universities attended the CEEPUS International Summer School of the GeoRegNet network. The summer school was attended by members of the program group and 6 lecturers from abroad. The theme of the summer school was the sustainable use of regional resources. Approaches to the evaluation and management of regional resources and geographical processes and factors influencing the sustainable use of ecosystem services, water, space, human capital and institutions, culture and creativity in Central and South-Eastern Europe were highlighted. The content of the summer school was directly related to the topic of the research group through studying the sustainable use of regional resources, which significantly contribute to the promotion of sustainable regional development in Slovenia. The summer school enabled the international dissemination of research work, which takes place within the research group, as well as the implementation of the acquired knowledge in the educational process.
