Nutritional assessment of 7 year old children from Ljubljana and it's vicinity in My milk 2 study

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the dietary intake of 7-year-old children and to determine whether their diet was in line with the guidelines. Data on eating habits, energy intake and intake of macro- and micronutrients were obtained using the methods of “24-hour recall” (24PD) and Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). It was found that the energy intake in both boys and girls is lower than recommended, the proportion of fats and carbohydrates in the all-day energy intake is adequate, and the protein content is too high. Both boys and girls exceeded the permissible values of salt and free sugar intake.

The impact of early life factors on growth and body composition of child

A key scientific challenge addressed in the present study was to investigate the impact of selected early factors on later growth and body composition in children aged 6-7 years. Among the studied factors, the BMI of mothers before pregnancy, the length of breastfeeding and weight gain in the first 3 months of life were shown to be important for the development of children. We believe that the results will be an excellent basis for developing new dietary guidelines and suitable nutritional interventions for the population of children in order to prevent/treat certain chronic non-communicable diseases including overweight.

"NUTRI-PROTECT" Children and adults nutrition as a protective or health-risk factor

The paper presents the applied research project "NUTRI-PROTECT", co-financed by the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS, project code: L3-8213) and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia. A key scientific challenges addressed in this project are to investigate the effects of early life nutrition on growth and health of children, to provide epidemiological data on the nutrient intakes in adults, including intakes of key micronutrients in specific populations, and to investigate links between nutrition and various markers of health. Research is carried out in two pillars, pillar A is focused into children and pillar B into adults. The results of the project will support further policy decisions and dietary/medical recommendations.

Use of dietary supplements in 7-year old children

The present study aimed to assess the patterns of dietary supplementation in a group of seven year old children enrolled in My-Milk study. Results provide the first insight into dietary supplementation in children in Slovenia. The included study sample is too small to enable generalisation to a wider population. Nevertheless, the presented results are the first step towards the confirmation of anecdotal reports about a wide-spread use of (non-medically prescribed) DS even in youngest children and point to a medicalisation of our society that is based on general perception of DS being allegedly beneficial, instead of being based on scientific evidence.
