Interview at Radio Slovenija, III. program, program ARS, oddaja podobe znanja

Doc. dr. Humar have been invited to radio broadcast Podobe znanja. In the broadcast he presented the work taking place in his research group, including the work funded by this research project. He explained to the general public the principle of operation of biocompatible lasers and their use as sensors in food and other biological systems.

Biocompatible mikro lasers as sensors for glucose concentration of glucose and temperature

The main motivation of this master thesis was the study of potential applications of biocompatible microlasers as biosensors. Microlasers can be implanted in a biological tissue where we can measure physiological parameters such as concentration of glucose and temperature in real time. If we want to use microlasers inside a biological tissue, they must be made of biocompatible materials which are also biodegradable. Biocompatible material does not cause any immune reactions and allow body to function normally. At the same time it is important that lasers are sensitive enough to environmental changes in the range of physiological values.

Remote measurement of temperature by using cholesteric liquid crystal 3D lasers

In this thesis we present physical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals and their usability in spherical geometry as 3D microlasers. Since the cholesteric liquid crystal structure acts as a resonator cavity and is sensitive to external stimuli, the lasing wavelength changes in response. We demonstrate their sensitivity and usability for remote temperature measurements. This method enables temperature measurements in a very small volume, which is not constrained to the surface of the measured system, at distances up to tens of meters, in real time and with the accuracy below a one degree Celsius in less than a second.
