COBISS.SI-ID: 31889191The indicator of exposure to ozone SOMO35 (Sum of Ozone Means Over 35 ppb) in Slovenia in the period 2002 - 2017 was calculated. The indicator represents the sum of the exceedances of the reference value of 70 µg / m3 (or 35 ppb), calculated as the maximum daily 8-hour moving average ozone concentration in a given year. Comparison by characteristics of individual locations and types of measuring points has shown that the value of the indicator in the observed period is the highest in Primorska with the trend of increase.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4271333Long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution is a serious and common public health concern associated with growing morbidity and mortality worldwide. There are many published studies about the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in response of the body tissues to outdoor air pollution exposure. The aim of our review was to investigate the problem of outdoor air pollution and health effects of pathological mechanisms, with specific goal to point out public health intervention strategies based upon a clearer understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms of outdoor air pollution. A systematic literature review was carried out in two bibliographic databases, Science Direct and PubMed, in the period from January 1995 to December 2015. We conducted a systematic analysis of 95 studies, 43 of them being review studies and 52 original studies. The systematic analysis was done in three steps, for each body tissue separately (respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurologic diseases and diabetes mellitus). This insight into literature review may help foster more effective preventive measures at the public health level as well as potential intervention strategies based upon a clearer understanding of the involved pathways.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4195045The doctoral thesis summarizes a long-term epidemiological study conducted in Slovenia. The study draws the following conclusions. - The Slovenian childbearing population and their children have low to moderate exposure to Hg. - The exposure of residents of the Idrija town: higher than in the residents of other areas (mostly due to elemental Hg), however, the majority of the residents did not exceed the values above which the health risk is expected to be elevated. - In general, there was no negative association between prenatal Hg exposure and cognitive development at the low-level exposure. However, APOE ?4 allele seems to modify the association in children with ‚normal‘ developmental scores. - Confounding for relevant factors important at such levels of exposure (co-exposure to other neurotoxic substances, nutrients, genetic factors, socio-economic factors,…). - Reference values established for the first time on a national level (lactating women!) - Exposure of the residents of the town of Idrija has not been investigated after closure of the mine in the non-occupationally exposed residents of the town - Probable modification of association between prenatal Hg exposure and cognitive scores dependant on the APOE genetic background at low levels.
