The results of our investigations of diffusion processes during oxidation of ilmenite were presented at fifth conference on frontiers of aberration corrected electron microscopy (PICO). Methods of advanced transmission electron microscopy using a combination of HAADF-STEM for structural analyses and EELS for nanoscale chemical analyses with determination of oxidation states of elements are most suitable for the analysis of initial stages of oriented (topotaxial) transformation at the atomic scale.

COBISS.SI-ID: 32447015We presented our investigations of cyclic twins at the 14. Multinational Conference on Microscopy (MCM 2019). Cyclic twin occur in cassiterite-based ceramics (with the rutile-type structure) when it is sintered in the presence of Co and Nb-oxide. Cyclic twins were analyzed by EBSD and we found crystallographically two types of twins, coplanar and alternating. In addition, the samples were analyzed by HAADF-STEM which revealed that the nucleus of the cyclic twins was enriched with Co and Nb, indicating that they were formed by oriented growth after a precursor containing both elements.

COBISS.SI-ID: 32716327A review of our results in the field of twinning and oriented overgrowths in the form of an invited lecture at the international conference on microscopy. Various mechanisms for the formation of twins in minerals and materials were presented, from chemically induced twinning to recrystallization (topotaxial) twinning, as occurs in the overgrowths of minerals with the rutile and corundum-type structures.
