Paratuberculosis in cattle: A dangerous and neglected disease in Slovenia

The article published in a journal called Glas dežele was intended for cattle farmers. The goal was to inform farmers with basic information on the clinical manifestation of paratuberculosis in order to facilitate early recognition and control of the disease. It also describes the effect paratuberculosis has on animal health as well as the economic loses and preventative measures of this insidious disease.

Traps when buying cattle

The seminar was intended for cattle breeders of Šentjur municipality and was attended by more than 100 participants. The lecture discussed possible ways of the introduction of infectious diseases that are present in cattle in Slovenia to herds. Special emphasis was dedicated to especially insidious paratuberculosis, where the trade of animals presents a major way of the disease introduction. Breeders were acquainted with possible measures that can ameliorate the risk of disease introduction to their cattle herds.

The paper presents paratuberculosis, the pathogen (MAP), prevalence, spreading of infection and how the infection is introduced into herd. The pathogenesis, course of the disease and clinical signs are described. Diagnostic methods and methods of disease control are presented. The situation regarding paratuberculosis in Slovenia is also described.
