One of the basic conditions for successful planting are quality and habitat-appropriate seedlings. The use of poor quality seedlings or even seedlings of inadequate provenance (origin) can have long-term and difficult to correct negative consequences (unsuccessful planting, slow and inadequate development of trees in the future). For the purposes of seedling quality control, we have developed a standard operational procedure, which is currently in internal use, as the procedures shown there are still being tested.

COBISS.SI-ID: 5632934Two brochures for practice: Forestry professionals in Slovenia have noticed the need for simple, yet important guidelines for foresters and forest owners regarding forest tree seedlings handling and forest reproductive material production. The success artificial regeneration by planting seedlings of forest tree species depends not just on seedling quality, but also on the seedlings handling, from the excavation in the nursery to planting in the forest. Improper handling with seedlings causes dehydration and drought stress in seedlings, root rot, pest attack and mold and disease, thereby reducing the vitality of seedlings. Due to the importance of production and usage of appropriate genetically diverse and locally adapted forest reproductive material, the field of forest seed production and arboriculture in Slovenia is regulated by the Forest Reproductive Material Act. It determines the conditions for production, marketing and use of forest reproductive material, obligations of persons involved in the production, marketing and import, professional tasks and procedures related to origin, quality and identity of forest reproductive material, methods of formation of reserves, implementation of control. Protocols provide all basic information that professional forester and forest owners should know about these topics.

COBISS.SI-ID: 58194691Presentation of official and national reference laboratories carrying out laboratory tests on plant samples, plant products and other objects to determine the presence of plant pests. Both official laboratories and national reference laboratories (NRLs) are designated and appointed by the Administration of Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection. The European Commission has appointed European Union Reference Laboratories (EURLs) to provide information, training and technical support to national reference laboratories and official laboratories. The area of work of each laboratory is determined by the type of pest and also partly by the type of plants. Tasks are defined and agreed between the laboratories, and the national reference laboratories in Slovenia are: - for bacteria (National Institute of Biology) - for viruses, viroids and phytoplasmas (consortium of the National Institute of Biology, the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing) - for nematodes (Agricultural Institute of Slovenia) - for insects and mites (consortium of the Slovenian Forestry Institute and the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia) - for fungi and oomycetes (consortium of the Forestry Institute of Slovenia, the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing).
