The paper presents a new diagnostic protocol of the European Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) for the detection of the fungi Verticillium nonalfalfae and V. dahliae. The protocol includes a morphological description of both fungi, a description of the diseases they cause with a focus on hops, and various molecular identification techniques. As part of the diagnostic protocol, we also published entirely new oligonucleotides for amplifying PCR markers specific for the detection of lethal pathotypes of the fungus V. nonalfalfae on hops. The protocol was reviewed by the international EPPO group for mycology, and it was also implemented as a harmonization document by all EU Member States for the official diagnosis of these fungi. The protocol represents an important social achievement in which the research achievements of our research group are included.
