Simulation study of a whole-body PbF2 Cherenkov TOF-PET scanner. Different configurations of the PbF2 crystals were simulated, including a multi-layer detector, which improves the time resolution and reduces the parallax error. Images of a phantom were reconstructed for different configurations. The fundamental limitation of TOF resolution in multi-layer detector, due to light production and transportation is about 22 ps FWHM.

Compact size of a SiPMs allows to construct multi-layer PET detector, which can improve the timing resolution and reduce parallax error. Single-channel multi-layer Cherenkov PET detector modules were constructed and tested using annihilation gammas from a 22Na source. Tests show that the efficiency is improved compared to a single-layer detector. Timing resolution was dominated by used SiPMs and could not be tested.
