The antimony film electrode (SbFE) was prepared as a possible effective alternative to toxic mercury in electrochemical stripping analysis of trace heavy metals. The SbFE was prepared in-situ on a glassy carbon substrate electrode and employed in combination with anodic stripping voltammetry or stripping chronopotentiometry. The SbFE certainly exhibits a favourable electroanalytical performance and will contribute to wider application and competitiveness of electrochemistry in the field of trace heavy metal analysis.

By measuring the thermooptical properties of ionic liquids (temperature coefficient of refractive index – dn/dT, thermal conductivity) it was demonstrated that ionic liquids (ILs) are far better solvents for thermooptical measurements (i.e. thermal lens spectrometry - TLS) than water. ILs enable at least 20 times higher sensitivity compared to that obtained in water as solvent, and the enhancement can be regulated by proper selection of the cation and anion in ILs.

Laboratory-prepared dual-segment (Au/Ni) nano-wires were deposited on the surface of an electrode and were used for on-demand protection of the surface of an electrochemical sensor for trace metals measurements against surface active compounds. The nano-wires enable either exposure of the electrode surface during the measurement step or setting the sensor in the protective/passive mode in-between repetitive measurements by switching magnetically the surface orientation of gold nano-wires containing a short nickel (magnetic) segment between vertical (active) and horizontal (passive) positions.

This work presents an overview of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as photodegradation, photocatalysis and ozonation, for removal of different pesticides in wastewaters. The emphasis of our work is however on the toxicity of degradation products and on bioanalytical techniques used to assess the toxicity. We confirmed the need for on line monitoring of pesticide degradation by appropriate fast-response and sensitive toxicity tests to ensure complete degradation and removal of any toxic compound.

A new book Environmental Chemistry of Aerosols brings together the current state of knowledge of aerosol chemistry. The chapter "Metals in Aerosols" gives an overview of the current knowledge in the field of aerosols, which include also metal species. The chapter comprises topics like sources of metals in aerosols, physico-chemical characteristics, reactivity and interactions of metal species in the atmosphere etc.
