1. From 19. to 23.6.2004 we organized the 15th European Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins at Brdo near Kranj. The symposium was very successful as regarding the organization as well as science. The event confirmed the position of our group among the leading groups in the field of toxinology. 2. Our organisation of the 1st Bioinformatics Meeting on December 2nd 2005 identified the researchers in the field and provided a forum for exchange of ideas and collaborations in Slovenia.

COBISS.SI-ID: 214138368The use of polymeric alkylpiridinium salts from the sea sponges (poly-APS and halitoxin) as DNA transfection agents was patented in collaboration with the research group from Aberdeen (Scotland). The described activity may be further employed in gene therapy. 3-alkylpridinium polymers form transient pores in membranes, by their action we can induce stable transfection of mammalian cells with foreign DNA.
F.32 International patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 220881531. Dr. Gregor Anderluh was invited in the Editorial Board of Analytical Biochemistry (ISSN: 0003-2697) which impact factor (2006) is 2.948. AB is one of the leading journals in the fields of analytical chemistry (9/68) and biochemical methodology (18/56). 2. In 2006, dr. Igor Križaj became a member of the Editorial Board of Toxicon (ISSN: 0041-0101) which impact factor (2006) is 2.509. Toxicon is the leading toxinology journal, it is among the leading journals in the field of toxicology (18/76) and in the upper half of the journals in the field of pharmacology and pharmacy (73/199).

COBISS.SI-ID: 18350121. Establishment of the national infrastructural centre for surface plasmon resonance aimed to study the kinetics of molecular interactions (http://web.bf.uni-lj.si/bi/sprcenter/indexeng.html). The centre is an integral part of the network of infrastructural centres at the University of Ljubljana. 2. Establishment of the laboratory for high-throughput yeast genetics at JSI. The laboratory is of a national importance since it provides experimental platform for national research projects ranging from computer to environmental sciences and an applicative/industrial project on drug discovery.
D.02 Establishment of a research centre, laboratory, study course, association
COBISS.SI-ID: 00000001. Dr. Igor Križaj was awarded for his contribution to explanation the molecular basis of neurotoxicity of secreted phospholipases A2 (sPLA2). With his results and novel approaches he opened new ways to study other toxic sPLA2s as well as mammalian sPLA2s and with this discovery of molecular processes in which these proteins are involved. 2. The research of prof. dr. Gregor Anderluh involves studies of lipid membranes and proteins that react with them. He described the molecular mechanism of action of eukaryotic cytolysin from the sea anemone Actinia equina.
