The study clearly demonstrates the importance of using bioassays together with chemical analyses for reliable assessment of wastewater quality. The quality of samples from a tannery was investigated by chemical analyses and acute toxicity measurements. The toxicity of the last samples increased significantly, although chemical measurements by themselves did not provide information about changes in wastewater composition. The agent for hide disinfection was found to be the reason for the increased toxicity of the samples as extremely high acute and chronic toxicity to organisms was determined.

Biochemical, reproductive and survival parameters of the water flea (Daphnia magna) after chronic exposure to IMI, commercial formulation Confidor SL 200 and diazinon are presented. According to the lowest observed effect concentrations, diazinon is more toxic to the survival and reproduction than IMI and Confidor SL 200. The environmental levels of diazinon are chronically hazardous to the reproduction of D.magna, but not for IMI. Due to the increased use of IMI we suggest further ecotoxicological studies with a broader spectrum of species before IMI is classified as safer than diazinon.

In brewing industry large amount of slurry originates beside sewage. Such slurry is often treated as a waste material. In one of Slovenian Breweries we have studied the possibility of processing of waste slurry into biogas. We introduced sequencing treatment of waste slurry in such manner, that we completely adopted the process to slurry discharge. In such manner we saved 50% of reactor volume and have reduced the energy demand of the brewery for 10-15 %.

The EU WFD requires the identification of significant human pressures and impacts on water bodies. The water quality of the Ljubljanica River (Slovenia) is described in terms of point sources (tannery and municipal effluents) and diffuse sources of pollution. Point sources of pollution dominate at the critical low flow periods. The water quality is marked by several determinants diluting with increasing flow and they link to point source pollution (organic pollution, ammonia, Cr, sulphate and chloride), whereas nitrate shows a mixed response of point and diffuse inputs mediated with in-stream.

The enrichment of natural waters by nutrients from different sources has been associated with eutrophication in many Europe river basins. A methodology of materials accounting was developed for the evaluation of nitrogen balance and applied for a case study on the Sava river basin, Slovenia. The results of the study showed that besides the reduction of point sources by implementing nutrient removal technologies, the management of agricultural pollution should become a major task with the aim to reduce the total load of nitrogen to river system.
