Numerous studies show the beneficial effect of reduced oxygen on the culture of animal embryos in vitro. However, few similar studies have been carried out in humans, and the conclusions from these were contradictory. Using sibling human oocytes, a prospective study was carried out to analyse the effect of 5 and 20% oxygen on prolonged development of embryos. The outcomes measured were fertilization rate and proportion of morphologically optimal embryos, blastocysts and optimal blastocysts developing on day 5.

BACKGROUND: To study the neuropathology and selected tumour markers of malignant gliomas, an animal glioma model was developed using the implantationof human glioblastoma clone U87 into rat brains. CONCLUSION: A simple, andwell-defined rat model of fast-growing glioma was established, providing a basis for further experimental studies of genetic and protein expression fingerprints during human glioma tumorigenesis.

Conclusions: Nestin is shown to be a strong prognostic marker for glioma malignancy. The presented data links the invasive glioma cells to CNS precursor cells, indicating that the most malignant cells in the gliomas may well be closely related to the glioma stem cells.

In a homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)-positive group of women with polycystic ovary syndrome undergoing in vitro maturation (IVM), the maturation rate of immature oocytes was significantly lower compared with a HOMA-IR negative group of women (47% vs. 59%). The results of our study showed that IR and hyperinsulinemia have an adverse effect on the developmental potential of immature oocytes retrieved in the IVM procedure.

Aim: To determine whether four potential genetic factors (polymorphisms in genes for alpha-adducin, beta-adducin, the G-protein beta-3 subunit and nitricoxide synthase) are important for the development of essential hypertension (EH) in Slovenian children and young adults with EH. Conclusion: We found no association between the investigated gene variants and EH, so we conclude that they do not confer a significantly increased risk of the development of EH in the Slovenian population of hypertensive children
